Document 2
Source: Speech by Eva Perón, First Lady of Argentina 1946-1952, delivered to over a million
working class and poor supporters, called descamisdos (the shirtless ones), at a rally in Buenos
Aires, Argentina, 1951. The rally was held in celebration of Loyalty Day, which celebrated
Juan Perón's rise to power. She had recently been diagnosed with the cancer that would kill
her.
"My beloved descamisdos: Today is a day of many emotions for me. With all my soul I
wanted to be with you and (Juan) Perón on this glorious day of the descamisados. I can't ever
miss this October 17 appointment with my people. I assure you that no one or nothing could
ever prevent me from coming, because I have a sacred debt to Peron and all of you, to the
workers, to the descamisados and the people.
I had to come and I came to give thanks to Perón and the descamisados of my fatherland.
What I say to Perón, who wanted to honor me with the highest distinction* that could be
granted a Peronist this evening, is that I will never cease repaying you and would give my life
in gratitude for how good you have always been and are with me.
Nothing I have, nothing I am, nothing I think is mine: it's Perón's. I will not tell you the usual
lies: I won't tell you that I don't deserve this. Yes, I deserve this award, my general. I deserve
it for one thing alone, which is worth more than all the gold in the world: I deserve it for all
I've done for the love of this people."
*Eva had been given two awards, the 'Recognition of Distinction of the First Category' and
the 'Grand Peronist Medal. Extraordinary Class'.
