Expert Solution
Introduction

Nucleotides are the building blocks of nucleic acid. Nucleotide consists of three distinct components namely heterocyclic compound (Nitrogenous base), pentose sugar (ribose for RNA and Deoxyribose for DNA) and a phosphate group. The heterocyclic compounds consist of nitrogenous bases adenine, guanine, uracil, cytosine, and thymine.

Nitrogenous bases are of two types:

  1. Purines = adenine and guanine.
  2. Pyrimidines = cytosine, uracil, and thymine. In this, cytosine is common for both RNA and DNA but in case of uracil, it is present in RNA and absent in DNA. In place of it, thymine is present in DNA.

Both purines and pyrimidines are present in equal amount in RNA and DNA. A+G = T+G (in DNA)
