Question

What are apical meristems?
Which type of plant growth
does this meristem promote?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Meristems are specialized type of tissues found in plants. They contain undifferentiated cells that have ability of cell division. Cells present in meristem can divide and develop into other different types of tissues and organs of the plants. Cells of meristems are incompletely differentiated or undifferentiated, totipotent, and have capability of continued cell division.

Step 2

Apical meristem is the region of cells found in the shoot and root tips of the plants. It has the capability of growth and division in the tip region of plants. It is responsible for the root and shoot extension and it gives rise or initiates the primary plant body. Plants continuously grow throughout their life span due to unlimited cell division of apical and other meristems. There are two types of apical meristems: shoot apical meristem (SAM) and root apical meristem (RAM). Shoot apical meristems are found in the terminal part of branches and stems of the plants. Root apical meristems are found in the root tip of plants and also known as root apex.
