What are some health behavior theories that can affect someone in the future?
Health behavior theories seek to understand and explain the reasons behind some of the health related aspects of human behavior and how to cure and prevent them. For example, the consumption of alcohol and smoke regardless of their impact on an individual's health. Health behavior psychologists work towards learning appropriate and applicable methods to prevent such behaviors by dwelling deep into the human behavior. Some health behavior models that can affect someone in the future are:
i) Health Belief Model: This model was developed in order to understand the reasons why people did or did not use the preventive services which were offered by the public health departments in the 1950s. The model now has evolved to address other concerns such as lifestyle concerns which increase the risk of certain diseases such as sexual as well as prevention of injury and the prevention and detection of diseases through the use of vaccines and screening. This model proposes that the beliefs of the people regarding their assumption about whether or not they are at risk of a certain disease and their perception of the benefits of not taking preventive services affects their decision of taking action.
- This model has been used for early detection of certain asymptomatic diseases such as cancer through mammography screening and cardiovascular diseases.
