Question

What are the advantages of heterozygote?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Genetics is the branch of biology that deals with the study of genome of an organism and its gene expression profiling and as well as genetic oriented diseases. Gregor J.Mendel is the father of genetics. His pioneering research work on cross breeding pattern in pea plants paved the way for modern genetics study and experiments.

Step 2

When a single copy of a disease allele does not result in a disease but instead is good for the person or organism that carries the allele is said to be a ''heterozygote advantage''. Heterozygote advantage is the case in which heterozygote individual has better fitness than the homozygous dominant or homozygous recessive individuals. A heterozygote has one cope of both alleles; including a dominant allele and a recessive one. This is sometimes referred to as over dominance. Heterozygote advantage maintains genetic variability within a population.
