Introduction

The signed integers can represent zero, positive and negative integers. There are basically three representation schemes that are available for signed integers:

  • Signed Magnitude representation
  • One's Complement representation
  • Two's Complement representation

In all the above three schemes, the most significant bit(MSB) is called the sign bit which is used to represent the sign of the integer where 0 is used for positive integers and 1 is for negative integers. The only difference in the above schemes is how they are represented in terms of magnitude.

An n bit signed integer can represent integers from the range -2(n-1) to 2(n-1).
