What does the lymph called?
Lymphatic System is a system which consists of lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes. It contains a fluid-like substance known as lymph. The main function of lymph is to help the body get rid of toxins and other waste materials. Lymphatic system helps in the transportation of lymph throughout the body.
Lymphatic system is very much similar to Circulatory System. Lymphatic vessels act as veins and capillaries to transport lymph. These vessels are connected to lymph nodes, a site for filtration of lymph. Lymphatic system consists of organs like tonsils, spleen, payer's patches of small intestine, thymus etc.
The composition of lymph is somehow similar to that of blood plasma. Lymph are more rich in lymphocytes than blood plasma. Lymph is derived from the interstitial fluid (fluid present between the cells in body tissues), hence, its composition changes continually as the blood and the surrounding cells exchange material with the interstitial fluid. It returns proteins and other useful materials into the blood and keeps the waste material with itself. Lymph also transports fats in the form of chylomicrons to the blood.
