Question

What is disadvantage of field load test?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Based on initial lateral pile load tests, soft day improvement was considered to have the greatest potential for enhancing lateral pile foundation resistance. However a test site was chosen where it was possible to investigate a wide range of soil stabilization methods suitable for treating soft day around a group of piles.

Field testing is a category of field research referring to the situations where the ground is examined in place by instruments placed in the ground or penetrated by it. Field test experiments are usually associated with experiments for which a borehole is either unnecessary or is just an incidental part of the overall test process, needed only to allow the test tool or equipment to be installed. Enhancements in instruments and deployment methodology , data collection and method of analysis were important. The rapid growth in the number, complexity and capability of field testing has made it difficult for engineers to keep up to date with advanced field testing and fully understand its benefits and limitations.

Advantages of Field load testing

  1. Tests are carried out during the natural surroundings without sampling interference, which can cause stress, pressure, drainage, fabric and particle arrangement to adverse effects and modifications.
  2. You will get continuous profiles of the properties / characteristics of stratigraphy and engineering.
  3. Detection of vulnerabilities and defects planes is more probable and realistic.
  4. Methods are generally fast, repeatable, generate large quantities of knowledge and are cost-effective.
  5. Tests may be conducted out in soils which are either expensive or impractical to sample without the use of costly advanced methods.
  6. It is possible to test a greater amount of soil than is usually feasible for laboratory testing. That may be more indicative of the mass of soil.
