Question

what is the mechanism of pacinian corpuscles adaptation?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Pacinian corpuscles are one of the four main types of mechanoreceptors cell in skin of mammals.

They are the nerve endings in skin which is responsible for sensitivity to vibration and pressure. They respond only to sudden disturbances and are very sensitive to vibration. The role of vibrations may be used for detection of surface texture.

Step 2

Mechanism:

Pacinian corpuscles sense stimuli because of the deformation of their lamellae which press on the membrane of sensory neuron and cause it to bend or stretch. When the deformation of lamellae occurs because of either pressure or release of pressure ,there is creation of generation potential as it physically deforms the plasma membrane of receptive area of neurons. This leads to leaking of sodium ions.

If this potential approaches a particular threshold, nerve impulses or action potentials are made by pressure sensitive sodium channels at the first node of Ranvier.
