With the end of the American Civil war, the interest of Americans started shifting towards global affairs. They started the intervention policy in the colonized countries to end the domination of the dominant colonial powers like Britain, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, France, etc.
The Spanish-American war was fought in 1898. The Americans wanted to end Spain's occupation in Cuba and Puerto Rico to establish their dominant trade relations with them.
