From 1922 to 1943, Italy had been a fascist state. Partito Nazionale Fascista (National Fascist Party) under Benito Mussolini had acquired power in Italy in 1922. The resentment and dissatisfaction among people over the way Italy was treated in the First World War, allowed Mussolini to group together the radical and fascist elements to create the Fascist Party and come to power. He became the Prime Minister of Italy in 1922 and eventually raised his position to that of a dictator.
