"What shapes our perceptions (and misperceptions) about science? In an eye-opening talk, meteorologist J. Marshall Shepherd explains how confirmation bias, the Dunning-Kruger effect and cognitive dissonance impact what we think we know -- and shares ideas for how we can replace them with something much more powerful:

Is Climate Change a Thing?
Before we even begin to engage in serious
questions and debate on factors related to climate
change and rational discussions on the potential
consequences of a changing climate, we must
address questions of science literacy, politics, belief
systems and human nature itself; our reluctance to
accept uncomfortable truths/facts. To be certain, we
are living in times of deep political divides,
competition of dogmatic ideologies and wholesale
proliferation of misinformation across all
messaging platforms - it's not surprising that many
American's find the topic of climate change
confusing, off-putting or choose to ignore the
subject entirely.

This Journal Topic is not a stage to debate climate
change, it's not a platform to espouse political
arguments nor express an opinion on the subject
itself rather, this topic is intended to address 'why'
the topic itself is difficult to understand and explore
factors that shape our thinking including individual
biases, belief systems, and human nature itself
before we begin to think about climate as an
atmospheric science governed by the scientific
method - a science of observable, empirical and
measurable evidence, all in an effort to understand
(prepare for and adapt to) change.
