Question

When does fatigue occur in metals?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Many times force acting on the mechanical component varies in magnitude from a positive value to the same negative value with respect to time, this force is called the cyclic load.

It is seen that mechanical components fail under cyclic load at stress which is much lower than the ultimate strength of the material. Sometimes it is found even lower than the yield strength of the material. This phenomenon under cyclic load is known as fatigue and the behaviour of the material under cyclic load is termed as fatigue failure.
