Hemoglobin(Hb or Hgb) is the member of the iron-containing oxygen-transport metalloprotein family in the red blood cells of almost all vertebrates as well as some invertebrates. Hemoglobin present in the blood transports oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body to provide energy to power the functions of the organism in the process called metabolism. Hemoglobin comprises four heme groups each of which is capable of reversibly binding to one oxygen molecule. Oxygen binding to any of these sites generates a conformational change in the protein, facilitating binding to each of the other sites.
