Broca's area is the region of the brain which is primarily responsible for speech production. It is located in the frontal lobe, the left hemisphere in the brain. It regulates language processing, enables the association of words together to form a sentence, also regulates the patterns of breathing as the person speaks, mediates the movements of the muscles of the pharynx, cheeks, lips, tongue, and produces vocals for normal speech. The deficit in the Broca's area causing impaired speech production is referred to as Broca's aphasia or expressive aphasia.

Behavioral and psychological problems associated with Broca's aphasia with affects an individual's ability to form normal and appropriate sentences, it makes a person unable to interact with others with proper use of language.

The symptoms of Broca's aphasia includes:

  • Inability to form meaningful sentences, says words without articles such as "the" "an" etc. 
  • Person struggles while communicating his thoughts to others
  • The language of the person lacks rhythm, the words and sentences are abrupt
  • It causes an individual to take frequent breaks while expressing himself or forming a single sentence. 
  • It also effects the writing skills, causing difficulty in writing long sentences.
  • The sentences lacks grammar
  • Difficulty in producing sounds
  • Difficulty in following commands, or instructions given by others
  • Impaired ability to understand other's speech
  • The person may reflect agitated behavior
