Cell wall is an important structure of the bacteria providing shape, rigidity and support to the cell. It forms the protective layer around the bacterial cell. It prevents the cell from the effects of osmosis and thus the cell without cell wall dies due to osmotic stress.  The bacterial cell wall (both Gram positive and Gram negative) consists of peptidoglycan layer which is made up of sugar and polypeptides that forms a mesh like structure. Thus in killing bacterial cells,  inhibiting its cell wall synthesis is the major phenomenon and several antibiotics can inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis.
