Breeding is defined as sexual reproduction occurring between two organisms of the opposite sex of the same species to produce offspring. In this process, gametes of the two individual fuses to form a zygote which divides and develops into a whole organism.

Mutations are defined as the change in the sequence of DNA of an organism due to any environmental factor, any chemical or mistakes during DNA replication, meiosis, and mitosis. Environmental and chemical factors include UV radiation, cigarette smoke, and exposure to any other mutagen. A mutation may include single base pair change or change in a stretch of nucleotides.

Mutation breeding or variation breeding is a process when seeds of a plant are exposed to certain mutagens to generate desirable mutations in it. The mutant developed from this seed is then used to breed with other plants.
