Textbook Problem

List and describe the four main system changeover methods. Which one generally is the least expensive? Which is the safest? Explain your answers.

Program Plan Intro

To list and describe the four main system changeover methods, name the least expensive and safest one.

Program Explanation

The four system changeover methods are:

  1. Direct cutover
  2. Parallel operation
  3. Pilot Operation
  4. Phased Operation

Direct cutover:

  • It is defined as the cutover in which the previous or the old system will be turned off as soon as the new system gets implemented and become working or operational.
  • Direct cutover is regarded as the least expensive cutover method because only one system has to be maintained and operated by the IT staff at one time.
  • More risks are related with the direct cutover method than any other cutover method.
  • For the implementation of commercial software packages, direct cutover is used because less risks are evolved with direct cutover method.

Parallel operation:

  • It is defined as the operation that keeps running both the new system as well as the old system at the same time.
  • The old system is terminated when the users, management, and the IT group are satisfied with the new system that operates correctly.
  • Parallel operation has a positive point of lower risk. In some cases, old system can be used to perform required task, if due to some reason, the new system is not working properly.

Pilot Operation:

  • Pilot operation is defined as the operation in which an information system is tried at one site, then the experience of the employee is used for deciding whether the new system should be used in an organization or not...
