Textbook Problem

Meiosis ______ the parental chromosome number.

  1. a. doubles
  2. b. halves
  3. c. maintains
  4. d. mixes up

Summary Introduction

Meiotic division is a division that occurs in a cell that typically lessens the number of chromosomes present in its parent cell by half. A diploid parent cell (2n) is used for the production of four haploid (n). Meiotic division occurs mainly in the reproductive cells (egg and sperm). When the haploid sex cells fuse together to form a particular distinct cell, they restore the diploid condition of the cell (zygote).

Explanation of Solution

Reason for correct answer:

All sexually reproducing organisms produce haploid number of chromosomes in their gametes. Such reproductive cells are produced through the cut by shortening the diploid cells with 2n of chromosomes and thereby producing half the number of chromosome (n) of haploid condition. Two reproductive haploid cells fuse together to produce one single diploid zygote cell. In humans, reproductive cells contain 23 chromosomes that were produced after the meiosis of diploid cells with 46 chromosomes. During fertilization, each parent cell contributes half of its total DNA content to its progeny.

Option b. is given as “Halves”.

Meiotic division of cells results in four haploid cells formed by reducing the chromosomes of diploid cells by half.

Hence, the correct answer is option b.

Reason for incorrect answer:

Option a...
