Stomata close in response to ________.

  1. a. ABA
  2. b. nitric oxide
  3. c. bacterial flagellin
  4. d. all of the above

Summary Introduction

Concept introduction: The minute openings found in the outer layer (epidermis) of stems, leaves, and other organs in a plant body are called stomata. The size of stomatal opening is regulated by a pair of particular parenchymal cells known as guard cells. Gaseous exchange during photosynthesis and water loss during transpiration is mainly through these openings.

Reason for correct answer: Stomata are the small opening present in the epidermal layer of leaves, stem, and other organs of a plant body. Its opening and closure has a very significant role in the plant life. During drought, plants would be in scarcity for water. For ensuring the minimal loss of water through stomata, the plant starts to produce abscisic acid hormone that in turn triggers the sudden production of nitric oxide. Going through many other physiological reactions, the stomatal opening gets closed finally. The presence of any bacterial flagellin inside the plant body also triggers the closure of stomatal pore.

Option d. is given as “all of the above”. Since stomatal opening in the epidermal layer of leaves and stem in a plant body is closed by the action of abscisic acid and nitric oxide and also by the presence of a bacterial flagellin, option d. is the correct answer.

Reasons for incorrect answer:

Option a...
