Describe two methods of striking an arc with an electrode.

Expert Solution
To determine

Two methods of striking an arc with the electrode.

Explanation of Solution

Two methods of striking an arc with the electrode are:

Scratching:

In this method, the electrode is held over the plate and is scratched across it. The electrode is raised to the desired arc length after the arc is established. The electrode is held at a place where the weld pool of desired size is required. Following this, the electrode is lowered and moved forward to start the weld bead.

Tapping:

In this method, the electrode is held in a vertical position and is lowered to reach just above the point where arc is to be struck. When the electrode is set to the position, it is lightly tapped on the work piece and immediately lifted from the surface to produce an arc. This method is generally not used by the beginners due to the required accuracy in the method is relatively high.
