Binding of a sperm to an oocyte plasma membrane causes the oocyte to ___ .

  1. a. enter an oviduct
  2. b. complete meiosis II
  3. c. secrete estrogen
  4. d. expel its nucleus

Summary Introduction

Concept introduction: Fertilization is the process where the male and female gametes unite to form the zygote. The sperm and egg, the male and female gametes respectively, have only haploid number of chromosomes. Binding of sperm to egg causes several changes in the egg.

Reason for correct statement:

The primary oocytes are produced from the primordial germ cells during embryonic development of the female. They are then halted during prophase I of meiosis. After puberty, meiosis resumes, the primary oocyte becomes an ovarian follicle with layers of cell around it and completes meiosis II as secondary oocyte. The secondary oocyte is halted at metaphase II. The meiosis halted secondary oocyte is released by the ovary into the oviduct for fertilization by the sperms. Once the sperm binds to the plasma membrane of the oocyte, the metaphase II is resumed, and the secondary oocyte completes full meiosis and the pronucleus is thus prepared.

Option b. is given as “complete meiosis II”.

As meiosis II of secondary oocyte completes when sperm binds to its plasma membrane, the correct answer is option b...
