What features of epithelial surfaces protect against pathogens?

Summary Introduction

To review:

The characteristics of the epithelial surface that protects against pathogens.

Introduction:

Physical and chemical barriers protect the body against pathogenic invasions. The skin that covers the exterior of the body and the epithelial surface that lines the internal body cavities and ducts, act as the first line of defense against pathogens.

Explanation

The tight junctions that are present between the epithelial cells covering the body surfaces check the entry of the pathogens and toxic substances into the body. The epithelial cells secrete the mucus layer on the epithelial surface. The mucus traps number of pathogens and foreign materials (toxins and harmful chemicals) due to its sticky and viscous nature.

The respiratory tract’s lining has hairs that are coated with the mucus, which prevents the entry of microbes and dust particles present in the inhaled air. Cilia are the hair-like microscopic projections, present on the mucosal membrane of the respiratory tract that moves in a specific way to push out microbes or dust particles trapped in the throat...
