What is a slave motor?

To determine

Explain about a slave motor.

Explanation of Solution

Discussion:

An alternator is an AC generator. The alternator’s speed depends on the frequency of the supply current and number of poles of the alternator.

Write the expression to find the alternator’s speed as follows:

RPM=60×HertzPair of poles (1)

Here,

Hertz is the unit of frequency of supply current.

As number of poles is constant for any running machine, rewrite the expression in equation (1) as follows:

RPMαHertz

As the alternator’s speed is directly proportional to the frequency of supply current, the speed can be controlled by varying the supply frequency
