Any real-life object interacting in a business scenario is represented in the form of an entity which has many attributes related to it, which describes characteristics of that entity. For a university environment student can be represent with the help of entity student which has multiple attributes such as Name, enrollment number, department wide, year of admission, address etc.

ER diagram is used to represent the interactions between these entities for a business environment.

An entity-relationship diagram is a graphical model that depicts the logical relationships and how these entities interact among themselves. It can provide the overall view of the system and describes the blueprint for making physical data structures.

In an ER diagram, entities are represented in the form of rectangles and relationship among them is represented with the help of square as shown in the diagram below:
