Textbook Problem

What is an unnormalized design, and how do you convert an unnormalized to 1NF? In your answer, specific pages and figures in this chapter.

Program Plan Intro

Describe unnormalized design and procedure to convert an unnormalized design to 1NF. Refer to specific pages and figures in the chapter 9 of this book.

Program Explanation

An unnormalized database design consists of a table or set of tables arranged in such a manner that there is redundancy of data and anomalies occur while insertion, deletion or updating of data in these tables. A table design which consists of repeating groups (set of one or more fields which have repeated values). Figure 9-20 in book and as shown below is an example of unnormalized design:

Unnormalized designs are often converted to 1NF, then 2NF and finally to 3NF. However normalization can be performed up to 5NF but generally for any business oriented application 3NF is sufficient to avoid any kind of anomalies.

A table is in 1NF if the following condition holds:

  • Each table cell should contain a single value.
  • Each record needs to be unique.

To convert a unnormalised data design in into 1NF or into first normal form following steps are performed

  1. Identify the columns which are forming repetitive groups...
