Often times readers desire for works that they can relate to on a personal level. With that in mind Billy Collins wrote a poem entitled, “On Turning Ten” discusses the hardships experienced from growing up. The poem is written from the perspective of a child who has turned ten years old and is looking back at their great life as a very young kid. The child sees the world in a different way and feels sad that he has grown up. Collins, through his poem, displays the emotional hardship of growing older
exception to the rule. I remember watching my brother Brandon, cheering him on at his high school football games, golf matches, and basketball tournaments. I was only six or seven at the time, so of course I wanted to be just like him. I proudly yelled his name in the bleachers, dressed in his big cotton sweatshirts. My little eyes saw Brandon as a superhero out there, on the courts, fields, and everywhere I saw him. I have forever held that notion in my mind, ultimately holding him on a high pedestal
immigrate to change their life forever. In my case, I decided to move to a foreign country as an exchange student, surviving a long forty-two hour flight from my home country, Tajikistan, to the USA. Actually, it was not my own idea to study abroad. My parents decided that it would be a great idea for me to spend my junior and senior year in the United States as an exchange student. They have always wanted the best for me. I remember the day; My family and friends were celebrating my thirteenth birthday
billions of people from multitudes of cultures and generations from the past and present. Honor holds such a value in some cultures that in the past, even committing a small dishonorable act could lead to death. By modern standards my interpretation of honor relates largely to a person staying committed and persevering through pain to maintain his honor. This is especially true when discussing the military. I have had aspirations to join the military for more than ten years now. I have always respected
game. I had taken one of my papers, pasted it to chipboard (the cardboard for puzzles), and cut it into puzzle pieces. Some pieces were paragraphs, one was the heading with my name and class information, and each of the sources on the Works Cited page was one piece. I highlighted in different colors the parts of my thesis statement and a corresponding word in each paragraph to help them see the order the paragraphs should go in. Also having the option to sit in on my professor's 2nd lecture that you did not understand fully during your class period. I commend Kennesaw State University for being unable to stand out among other colleges. I have been given the opportunity to explore several degree options and I am content with my selection in The Department Leadership and Integrative
who is serving thirteen months in prison, from 2004 to 2005, for a drug trafficking and money laundering crime she committed nearly ten years before. For most of her entire stay Piper is placed in a minimum-security prison in Danbury, Connecticut. I am from Avon, Connecticut so because her story was so close to home it immediately struck me as interesting. Her experience is eye opening, and as the book progresses you can see a slight transformation from a “normal” person to a hardened convict. Pipers
I do not remember much from when I was five years old, but I will never forget Saturday mornings playing soccer in the playground behind my elementary school in a small program run by parents in the neighborhood. My dad was not around much during the week due to a very time-consuming job, so the weekends he got to spend with me and my sister was very important to him. Allie, my sister who is two years older than me, is the one who got my family into soccer. My dad signed up to be a coach for her
As the daughter of two immigrant parents, I've had the same feeling children from immigrant workers experience. To live in fear, not knowing whether or not their families will have enough food and a home for the next day. Many families like my own live paycheck to paycheck, never having enough money to survive. Sometime it's either you pay the rent, or you buy food, and at the end there is nothing left other than the safety of their families. Farm workers work in low paying jobs, long painful hours
