1) Hello! Today I’m going to present my global perspective project called “How effective are social networks for disaster relief?” It becomes clear that following talk will be about social networks and disaster relief.
2) So, all of you probably noticed the speed of technology’s development, and of course of social networks. And all of you agree that they become a necessary part of modern society. Along with that, we become the witnesses of disasters which are happening almost every day. It’s really awful to watch news because there are many catastrophes such as storms, hurricanes, earthquakes, terrorism or accidents between countries, which often lead people to sufferings and even deaths. But how do two different issues interact

10) Now, it is an algorithm of all previous processes of help. “Upload photos and videos” , “Find or create facebook page” . “step3 use citizen help” “Wait for emergency response teams”
11) News on NHK world channel about quake hitting Japan
12) At that time, right after the disaster there are words about helping Japan and a monetary donation.
13) This cartoon proves that news on social networks are much quicker than from other sources, and they talk about disasters in Japan
14) Many social networks, like Facebook, support organizations such as Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management, Green Crescent, Red Cross etc. On Facebook pages, for instance, people who involved in assistance put the information about disasters, share ideas of how to normalize the way of help, put pictures of how the organization is working. Others, the evidences, watch it via social network and being registered there may join the organization. Thus, number of volunteers is growing sharply, in other words there are whole groups of people ready to start actions
15) However, there are some “contras” or opposite point in that issue of using social networks for disaster relief. The service warned that using social networks is taking risks. As report said, along with advantages of social media, there are drawbacks, too. He meant the sham or fake reports may diffuse (ю) via social networks, that is why people should not rely on technology, because there are some limitations
“Social media makes the community part of the actual crisis communication response. For example…Twitter was used to quickly share initial information and updates during the 2007 and 2008 California wildfires, 2008 Mumbai massacre, 2009 crash of US Airways Flight 1549, 2010 Haiti earthquake, and 2011 Tunisian uprising.” This information, again in Veil’s 2011 article, reinforces the idea of how social media communication is highly beneficial and furthers an individual’s ability to remain informed on current events.
Appropriate technology, such as social media, affecting communication during the crisis situation and how these technologies may be used to enhance communication
In Joe Piscatella’s documentary #chicagoGirl he focuses on the story of the young girl Ala’a Basatneh fighting injustice through the internet. Many times throughout the film there is a strong correlation to technology being used as a weapon. It shows how strong your voice can be used to reach those all around the world even though you are miles away like Ala’a Basatneh. She lived in chicago but was fighting against the syrian regime through a social media platform, Facebook. She stated that she felt very strong about doing what was right and how without social media it would have never been possible. In addition the essay “The Drowning Child and the Expanding Circle” by Peter Singer is based on his talk with his college students. He asks them ‘to imagine that their route to the university takes them past a shallow pond. One morning ... you notice a child has fallen in and appears to be drowning’’ and tells them how it would cause a loss to them. Then he asked if they were obligated to take action and they said yes. Now he challenged them to think of someone drowning all across the world and asked if they would still be able to help them. He opens their minds how being far away does not “ exempt” you from doing anything it's how you decide to take action. Singer stated that “ Instant communications... changed all
For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past five years, welcome to the world of social networking. According to ComScore, over one billion people use social networking sites across the globe. That means that everyone who’s anyone has a page or account with twitter, myspace, facebook, skype or any of the other hundred emerging sites. People have discovered a better way to communicate with other people all over the world, far surpassing snail mail and e-mail. Why send a letter to your cousin living in France or pay outrageous money for a phone call to your brother stationed in the Middle
Internet plays an important role to collect people all over the world. People in social media present their opinion freely in several aspects, such as political, economics, entertainment, even their life experience. Clay Shirky mentions the example of Ushahidi. There is violence in Kenya after its election in 2007. At that time, the government announces a blackout of social media. People in Kenya cannot get the information about what happened in their country and where is the violence. Thus, there are two programmers lunch Ushahidi, which can locate the place of violence and let the public know. When people realize the Ushahidi are useful in their life, Ushahidi becomes a public platform to transmit the current event and uses in people’s daily life. People like to invent new things in order to make their life easier. People are not only concern to maximize their self-interest. People pay more attention on the society and eager to make contribution to this world. The cognitive surplus makes people selfless to the
Another aspect that needed closer attention after the attack was the channel of communication when the disaster happened. There needed to be a reliable channel that wouldn’t be affected by the failure of the corporate system. Over the years, social media usage as a communication channel has come in handy. It has been used to create a strong collaboration between corporate to client and corporate to corporate for communication purposes. Various corporations can communicate the progress of the data recovery efforts to both their workers and clients. For example most clients would get depressed by failure of a system that manages their data, hence, an assurance of data safety would calm their anxiety in the wake of the disaster. Facebook, Twitter and Linked In are the widely used social media channels for communication because of their robustness, ubiquity and they are free to use.
Reliable and accessible communication and information technology is irreplaceable tools of communications to the community (The associated Press and NORC,2013). The importance of social, medical presence became evident during the time of Super storm, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram were all utilized during the disaster to communicate with victims, families, responders and share the ever changing events. Social media presence encourages community involvement, with the accessibility, recently updated status, and current developing actions. For example, the New York of Emergency Management provided hourly updates and evacuation orders via twitter and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie relayed updates about the storm and aid and evacuation orders via his personal twitter
The disaster response program in the United States consists of a number of different elements that must work together to achieve common outcomes-such as the rapid alleviation of suffering by the victims of a natural disaster, industrial accident, or terrorist attack (Miskel, 2008). Responding to each disaster presents its own unique set of challenges. An effective disaster response program will consist of several elements working as one. The specific elements vary depending on the location and the nature of the disaster or terrorist incident, but fall into three general categories: the private sector (including individuals and both corporations and non-profit entities such as the Red Cross and the Salvation Army), state and local government
The Haiti earthquake of 2010 challenged the way the international humanitarian community had been collecting data for and during an emergency crisis. After any large-scale disaster, there is always a period of chaos where NGOs are trying to gather and analyze as much critical information as possible that would be required to establish the essential needs of the affected persons most efficiently, this comes as a result of humanitarian organizations failure to develop adequate preparedness for disaster. The Haiti quake illustrated, for the first time, the use of technologies such as social media and mobile phones by the affected community to issue pleas of help and indicate their requirement needs. Volunteers from around the world responded
In our society, social networking has become very popular over the last 5 years. Twitter is a social networking site that allows users to become “followers” of other people and stay informed about current events and social trends. Many argue whether or not these social websites such as Twitter, are good for society. In two articles about Twitter, the authors present different arguments about why Twitter is good or bad for society. The author of “Heading off disaster, one Tweet at a time” by Jim Spellman, states that Twitter is a good way of communicating current events happening around the world. The other article, “Is Twitter Bad for National Security?” by Tony Bradley, argues that Twitter could have dangerous effects on our nation’s
In less than two decades, social media has revolutionized modern communication and information sharing. What began as a simple form of social networking has turned into innumerable platforms for people around the globe to share ideas, create and share businesses, promote brands, read news from various sources, as well as share and find vast amounts of information, among many other uses. Thus, with a few clicks of a button, people are now able to interact with someone on the other side of the world. The capabilities created through social media’s many uses have forever changed global politics, business, and interpersonal communication.
CNA, a research facility, partnered with the National Emergency Management Association to provide research and information on the public’s expectations about emergency management’s use of social media. Before this research, the data about this connection was only done with case studies and unreliable accounts. CAN used a survey in this research to see how people felt about social media in connection with emergency management. The results found an positive approach. Many people in emergency management agencies, on local and national levels are very familiar with social media. It is usually the larger websites that are more widely known. Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, are widely known and publicized. There are however many other social media sites that are not as widely known that are even more useful to nationwide security and communication such as crowdsourcing and Nixle and these are not as widely known (Su, Wardell, & Throkidsen, 2013). So while people in emergency management
Researchers have also noticed that social media is not purely beneficial, but it has some serious negatives
The procedure of emergency correspondence is known for the quick contact of significant partners and the capacity for such a procedure to change at the briefest time of notice. Advance, it is a field that is developing, and its utilization is developing at a high rate. The quantity of stages utilizing online networking has developed from the previous ones, for example, Myspace, Friendster to the most famous ones, for example, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, Instagram, and Foursquare. The way that these two fields have met is a huge one to correspondence scientists and also strategists (Schein, 2015).
