When Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot invented the first automobile in 1768 he had no idea that it would grow to the magnitude in which it is today. The automotive industry has been thriving for decades, raising the bar each year on luxury and car performance. The first automobile was powered by steam; it would be nearly thirty years later before the first internal combustion engine powered automobile was introduced.
Then in 1886 Karl Benz created the first gasoline-powered vehicle. Although he went through several prototypes of automobiles within his lifetime, he created the foundation for the vehicles we drive today. His ingenuity paved the road for concepts such as the electric car and the vehicles that burn fuel alternatives.

In celebration of all things automotive, below are automotive history facts for the month of June.
June is the perfect month for outdoor automotive events such as car shows and racing. It is also a great month in automotive history. On June 4, 1896 Henry Ford introduced the world to his Quadricycle. He tested the Quadricycle, which proved to be quite successful. This was the first four-wheel self-propelled vehicle.
Porsche lovers would be surprised to know that the prototype of the two-seated luxury mobile was first tested on June 8, 1948. It was known as the Porsche 356-1. Dr. Ferdinand Porsche tested the prototype himself near a sawmill in Gmund,

The automobile industry made owning an automobile more available to the public. Factories began producing cars in higher numbers than one craftsman would ever be able to. “The first automotive production on a commercial scale began in France in 1980, but the United States in the 1900’s became equal to the European automobile factories. The Europeans used engineering and handcraft methods, while the U.S. had plants that used the assembly line” (The History). Frank Duryea of Springfield, Massachusetts developed the first gasoline powered automobile in the United States, and over the next twenty years 8 million cars were manufactured and sold (Clayton 501). On the other hand, Henry Ford’s first working gasoline engine was completed at the end of 1843, and “by 1896, he had completed his first horseless carriage, the Quadricycle, so called because the chassis of the four- horsepower vehicle was a buggy frame mounted on four bicycle wheels” (Curley 165). Ford revolutionized factory production with his assembly line methods (Curly 163). The assembly line remained hard on laborers, required them to perform routinely repetitive tasks for hours on end. To retain workers, Henry Ford paid workers five dollars a day, and employees only work eight hour days. Mass production techniques rapidly increased worker productivity and output, allowing more cars to be made and to sell for less money. By the 1920’s, the number of registered vehicles rose over fifteen million, because of Henry Ford’s assembly line, which made manufacturing automobiles more time efficient and less costly, making automobiles less expensive. In 1929, Ford, who was one of Thomas Edison’s greatest admirers, asked him to design a battery for a self-starter, to be introduced on the Model T, which was Ford’s car for the common man (Curley 139). The automobile was actually officially invented in 1885 by Karl Benz, in Germany, the United States perfected and dominated the automobile industry starting with Charles Edgar Duryea and his brother Frank Duryea. Together, they brought the United States’ first automobile in 1893. At the time, the incredibly new and innovative creation of the automobile was quite remarkably on of the most impressive inventions to the American people at the time. What this particular technological advancement did for the American Industrial Revolution was create convenience and sparked interest. Years pass as gasoline engines, wheels, and a steering device were added to the automobile, which began to make it useful but expensive (“The Invention of Automobiles”). They were hand-crafted at this time, therefore making it unaffordable. Until Henry Ford introduced the assembly line in 1913, automobiles remained expensive. His discovery of the assembly line turned the hand-crafted machines to mass-produced automobiles. Since automobiles were being mass-produced, the cost for assembling a single car dropped low enough for it to be affordable to many families (“The Invention of Automobiles”).

One of the first new and improved car of the 1920’s was the Ford Model N (“Automobiles”). The Model N was said to be “the very first instance of a low cost motorcar driven by a gas engine having enough cylinders to give the shaft a turning impulse in each shaft turn which is well built and offered in large numbers” (“Automobiles”). Encouraged by the Model N, Ford wanted to better and more improved car. Ford then built the four cylinder, twenty horsepower Model T, that usually sold for around $825 (“Automobiles”). The Model T had a two speed transmission making it easier to drive, and a detachable cylinder for easier repair. Vanadium Steel helped make the Model T a lighter and more durable car, and at the same time it was guaranteed a smooth ride because of its high chassis. With all of these new types of cars there were also some luxury cars that were available. In 1929 the Rolls Royce Phantom came out, selling between $17,000-$18,000, having the top of the line features for this time era (“Rise of Automobiles”). Also there was the Locomobile Model 48 selling for around $13,000 or $130,000 in today’s age (“Rise of Automobiles”). The invention of the jeep was a very interesting time because there are many groups that helped make it, why they made the jeep, and how many they made. In 1940 a group called the Bantam group and the owner's name was Karl Probst, they were just doing their job, then one day right before world war 2 he got a call from the army saying that that need a reliable, rugged, and easy to fix car to take into the war. It’s quite surprising that the auto mechanic business has been around for over a 100 years and is still managing to pump its pistons and roll out freshly repaired cars ("The History" Intro), but that wouldn’t be possible without the creation of the automobile in the first place and as such, the history of the automobile is just as important as the history of the auto mechanic business.
Since the development of the steam engine people had been interested in creating self-powered vehicles, this manifested during the industrial revolution as the train. However, as time went on people became interested in creating a vehicle that wasn’t confined to tracks. The earliest attempts were moderately successful but served little practical purpose. Automobiles first began to truly spread with the invention of the electric motor which created cheaper, more powerful, and safer automobiles. Still the automobile still had numerous problems and were mainly in the hands of the rich.
