2.1 Introduction
Sporting injuries can be a very stressful, emotional and sensitive time for that of an athlete. Whether the athlete be recreational or elite, the prevalence of injury can be a traumatic, nerve-wracking experience. For competitive athletes in particular, there can be heightened levels of despair, frustration, fury and confusion with add-on effects such as loss-of confidence and fear of returning to the game (Evans et al 2006). According to Marjorie (1997) the occurrence of an injury not only temporarily incapacitates but places an athlete in a world with no guarantees or predictable outcomes. Injury rehabilitation is an essential element which allows injured athletes to return to previous fitness and begin to again play

Physical sporting injury and the treatments in place are much published within literature today. However, there is little attention paid to that of the psychological treatments needed by sporting athletes and also the fears and emotions they might feel during the injury process and/or on return to full participation of their chosen sport. While the physical injury may be treated effectively and athletes are at the stage where returning to sport is permitted, they may be apprehensive or carry a fear about the possibility of returning to training and play (Herring 2006). In 1997, Crossman stated that effective injury management requires an understanding of the psychological processes involved and the knowledge of the strategies that can affect healing. In 2006, Herring backed up this statement believing that team physicians must be considerate of psychological factors to a similar extent as that of physical when treating and coordinating care for injured athletes. Psychological factors have been shown to be associated with the recovery and rehabilitation period following sports injury, but less is known about the psychological response associated with returning to sport after injury.
2.2 Emotions of an Injured Athlete
The overall emotional response to injury can vary widely between athletes. Sports injuries often result in an immediate imbalance and disruption to the lives of the injured athletes including loss of health and achievement of
* Isolation- During their recovery from injury, the athlete spends less time with their team mates and coaches, and may feel left out or isolated. They may experience feelings of depression, anxiousness, and sadness. Because of their emotions, the athlete may not want to be around others. Often, an athlete will withdraw, which provides temporary relief from their feelings. Unfortunately, being away from others, particularly team mates and coaches, keeps the athlete away from the support and energy they need to recover. The emotional experience from injury may cause the athlete to be moody, grouchy, and easily irritable.
Psychology impact of sport injuries is a topic no one hears much about until an athlete is injured and goes through it himself/herself. High school athletes as well as professional ones both are exposed to injuries at any time, the impact of this injury might be the same. Getting injured is devastating for most athletes, what they don’t hear much is how bad it can get to them mentally. Depending on the injury, some athletes are able to return to the sport, others are not so lucky. When they are affected emotionally or mentally, it does not only affect them, but their team, the fans, and even the coaches. In most cases, these injuries and the rehabilitation process are often followed by psychological consequences which can impact the athletes’ well-being, as well as their chances of returning to their sport. The importance of sport psychology will be discussed throughout the paper to give a better understanding on how it affects athletes when dealing with a sport injury. Being aware of the psychological symptoms, as well as knowing how to avoid the effects could make a difference on someone. As well as knowing how important rehabilitation is when wanting to return to the game as soon as possible, if probable.
When playing any athletic sport, there are multiple risks that a player, such as I, may encounter while participating in each sport. Growing up in a sports family, meant I played multiple sports as a young athlete, such as, baseball, football, basketball and swimming. During my younger sports years, I cannot recall any major injuries or concussions in any of the sports I played. While practicing and participating in any sport or activity it is necessary to take precautions, by using the proper equipment and good technique before, during, and after the activity. As an athlete with many hours of practice and conditioning, I felt I ready for almost anything life could throw at me. As an athlete, I have pushed my body to the limit and my body started to push back with injuries leading to partial fractures, MCL tears, and UCL strain.
First, is the education of the patient, if the athlete is willing to report and communicate the problem to the appropriate personnel at the moment and time when it happens, the medical staff will be on the ability of removing the athlete from participation if it is necessary. In addition of educating the athletes, it will be vital to focus on the education of coaches, and parents over the consequences of this injury, the responses of the athlete during the injury, importance of reporting this to the medical personnel (Athletic trainer), and acceptance of the injury. By increasing the awareness of the injury, the medical staff will be more accurate, precise, and the time of recovery will be lower since the athlete will report it in a shorter period of time.
Analysing the effects, recovery and prevention assist in determining the extent of what the injury does to individuals participating in the popular well-known sport.
A psychological response to common sports injuries is anger. Anger can be towards the person who caused the injury, as they may have ruined their chances of getting into a higher level in the sport. The anger can be towards yourself because you could have come back to the sport too soon and the injury had reoccurred. You can think to yourself it I had only given it another week before I did the sport again the injury may not have happened.
The integrated sport injury model consists of three main components. These components are cognitive appraisal, emotional response and behavioral response. The model
Past research has seen the relationship between athletic injuries and psychological factors as essentially stress-related (1). In this sense, stress is predicted to produce increased state anxiety and consequently alterations in attentional focus and muscular tension. It is important to note that stress does not exist outside the individual “ not all people respond negatively to
This article was written by Catharine Paddock, who is a staff journalist with Medical News Today, she has a Ph.D. and mainly focuses on treatments and prevention for certain diseases. This article discusses sports injuries for young athletes and how prevention and treatment can help through the process to getting back on the field. This article talked about the common sports injuries (i.e. fractures and dislocations), back and neck injuries, the rehab process, and prevention of sports injuries in young athletes. In order to make this argument, it talks about the body’s imbalances and tips on preventing injuries beforehand. They also report methods of going to rehab and how to keep your body healthy before going out and playing the sport of
“My body could stand the crutches but my mind couldn’t stand the sideline”. Michael Jorden said this while he was physically hurt. This is one of the key reasons as to why people who get injured while playing sports push threw the pain; while there is huge excitement preforming on the court, there is little excitement sitting hurt on the bench. Yet, pushing threw the pain is not a good preference when the extent of the pain is unknown. Sports injuries can affect you your entire life depending on how major the injury is. With knowing the importance of sports injuries, money can be saved, and enjoying the sport will be simpler. Along with different kinds of injuries, there are two different levels of injuries that are easy to prevent once the causes are known.
After a major injury, your brain relates the pain you endured to the sport or action you were performing when the injury occurred. Therefore, this may cause an athlete to not play up to their full potential in fear of a recurring injury. Stress injuries, or overuse injuries, are very common in the sports world and are also the most common kind of recurring injury. A stress injury, more common in tendons, happens when there is constant overuse or “stress” put on one or more tendons. Stress injuries are common in sports such as swimming, track, and water polo, where the movement it takes to play the sport is all very similar such as throwing, catching, and rotation of the shoulder while swimming. Adolescents with concussions show personality changes, irritability, and attention deficits. Unfortunately, it’s hard to notice these attention deficits right after an athlete suffers from a concussion. The difference in developmental potential can only be noticed at a later time, but by then it is harder to treat, which makes it hard for an athlete to make a complete recovery
Emotional and psychosocial responses to injury also vary depending on the phase of injury they are in. Generally, the inflammation phase of injury, referred to as the reaction phase, has the most negative effect on emotions. Feelings of depression, hopelessness, and denial are commonly seen. The second phase, which takes place during rehabilitation in the fibroblastic proliferation phase of healing athletes have a common response of frustration and caution (Clement et al., 2015). This stage of healing can be very difficult for the athlete because of the limitations put upon them. Many athletes are very aware of their bodies and when an injury occurs and their body isn 't responding as it usually does this causes frustration. Athletes also tend to be very cautious of their injury at the beginning of their rehabilitation. The pain they experience and the unfamiliarity of the exercises are so foreign to their bodies that they are very cautious when trying to initial push themselves. The final phase of healing is the maturation phase, which is also the return to play phase of rehabilitation. During this time in the healing process
shown that the majority of athletes use psychological skills on their own accord during injury
All around the world, people are participating in sports for various reasons, such as for their personal interest, health and fitness, and many more. However, injuries in sports which can result in pain, loss of playing time, as well as medical expenditure can occur too often. In the more serious cases, the injuries may result in fractures of bones, which in turns cause limitation in the mobility, resulting in permanent cease of attendance in sports, and in limited extreme cases even death. For professional sports player, absence of a game due to unfortunate injuries may result in huge economic losses. As a result of these undesired events, scientists and medical professions are constantly on the lookout of new and improved ways to prevent and reduce the possibilities of sports injuries (Fong, Hong, Chan, Yung, & Chan, 2007). Injuries to the ankle are one of the most common injuries occurring in sports. The ankle joint may become unstable following an ankle sprain, and normally it requires a long time before it can be restore to its full potential. The management and prevention of the injuries become the crucial parts during the recovery process.
Sports injuries are common in the athletic world; some are minor while others are severe. Sports injuries are any type of injury that occurs during exercise or sports (Stoppler & Jr., 2014). Sports injuries can be both physical and mental. Unfortunately, these injuries can lead to diseases and death such as Chris Benoit and Aaron Hernandez who both died in the twenty-first century. People need to focus more on the mental health of players, for it is just as important as physical health. Therefore, it is the sports organization job, such as the World Wrestling Entertainment and the National Football League, to promote better mental health protection in sports to reduce sports injuries.
