Throughout the 18th century, The French and Indian War (1754-63), also known as the Seven Years’ War, altered the relationship between Britain and its American colonies politically, economically, and also in ideological ways. During this time, the country with the most land had the most power. Britain and France had a lot of conflicts because Britain felt threatened by French. Britain was not pleased with the fact that France was expanding into the Ohio River, however Britain eventually won the war. The War was ended by the Treaty of Paris 1763.Britain gained control over Canada and Florida and they were able to open The Mississippi valley westward. North America before 1754, was dominated by French and the Spanish, however North America after 1763 was dominated mainly by the English and the Spanish (Document A). Britain and Spain came to an agreement and they decided who got what land. Britain dominated North America, which is why King George III signed the Proclamation of 1763, which prohibited all settlements along the Appalachian Mountains. They were prohibited to settle west of the boundary because that settlement was for the Indians. However, before the war Britain sided with the Iroquois Indians and colonists, whereas the French sided with Huron Indians. During this time George Washington, Commander-in-Chief, wanted to be better in order to serve his country. Therefore, he decided to contact Edward Braddock, a British General, to obtain some knowledge of the Military Profession (Document C) . He lied and stated he was going to fight for them, but he actually wanted to know their strategies in order to help his country and use them against Britain. Britain was not always winning the war, there was a point in time in which French was winning. The turning point of the war was when William Pitt, leader of Great Britain’s government, took over the wartime operations. The stamp act, as mentioned before, was one of the acts that took away some of the rights of the colonists. The act stated that no one can publish a paper unless it was stamped, therefore some people would not write or publish anymore because they did not want to pay. “Adieu Adieu to LIBERTY,” which translated to “Good-bye Good-bye to LIBERTY.” (Document H). This was very symbolic because they were getting taxed for a stamp, also because the picture shows a skull where the stamp should be. This is very depressing because people do not have the money to pay for the taxes. However, after the British won the war, they also benefitted from it. After the war, Reverend Thomas Bernard, started praising the colonial soldiers and he stated “Now commences the Era of our quiet Enjoyment of those Liberties which our Fathers purchased with the Toil of their whole Lives, their Treasure, their Blood.” (Document E). This refers to how people should start enjoying their freedom because they won the war.
