“Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882, into a wealthy family. The Roosevelt’s had been prominent for several generations, having made their fortune in real estate and trade. He later on attended Groton (1896-1900), a preparatory school in Massachusetts, and received a Bachelors degree in history from Harvard in just three years. Once that was completed he began to study law at New York’s Columbia University. Although he never completed his degree he passed the bar examination in 1907, which allowed Roosevelt to practice law at a prominent law office in New York City.
In 1910 he entered politics when he ran for the New York Senate as a Democrat in a primarily Republican district in; he was elected and reelected in 1912. It wasn’t until he offered his support for Woodrow Wilson’s candidacy of the Democratic National Convention. On January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born to James and Sara Roosevelt. The Roosevelt’s were a prominent family for many generations, staking their claim in the economy through real estate and trade. As an only child he got plenty of attention from a mother who adored him, almost to the point of being overbearing. Even though his mom could be strict, Roosevelt was a spirited child who still found ways to get in trouble the minute her head was turned. His father wasn’t as attentive, being that this was the late 1800’s, it was the woman’s job to raise the children. It has been connected by a biographer James MacGregor Burns that Roosevelt’s father was more involved with his son than what was typical at that time (MacGegor, pg 29)
They were the first American troops ever sent overseas, arriving at the southeastern end of Cuba on June 22, 1898. Roosevelt would go on to lead the group to victory, but sadly many soldiers would die due to yellow fever, lack of food and supplies and unsanitary camps. Roosevelt would be remembered for the Round Robin letter he sent asking for the U.S. troops to be removed from Cuba. After the soldiers were brought home, Americans called Roosevelt a national hero for bringing them home safely.2 Roosevelt would be called a war hero and receive a nomination for the Medal of Honor. He was elected as governor of New York in 1898.1 The Republican political machine in New York supported Roosevelt for governor. However, once he was elected governor, it was clear to them that he had no interest in listening to their ideas or following their ways. This would lead Roosevelt into becoming the running mate for McKinley in the presidential election, in hopes of preventing a second governor term for the once loved war hero. McKinley would go on to win the election and Roosevelt would become the Vice President, but this was short lived. On September 6, 1901 McKinley was tragically shot and killed. He had an older sister Anna and later he would obtain a younger brother and sister, Elliot and Corinne. His family had owned a successful plate-glass import business. As a young boy, Theodore Roosevelt (or teddy) as his family so frequently called him ( of which he wasn 't very fond), spent a lot of time inside his family 's home. He was home schooled because his illnesses and asthma. This gave him the time to delve into his passion for animals, but by his teens though, with the encouragement of his father Theodore developed strenuous exercise routines that had included weightlifting and boxing.
