Redifining Presidency: Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Since the founding of the United States of America, many presidents have worked tirelessly in their posts to change our country for the better. Some have seen abounding success, while others have met a slow decline from glory.  Of all of these generally noble and brave men, one especially has stood out; Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a remarkable idealist of a man and an amazing vehicle for change in America. While in office, this dignified man demonstrated many positive qualities, such as unrelenting optimism, heartfelt concern for both the populace and the land of America, and fierce determination to accomplish his goals.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, once a successful president of the United States, made the nation a great place because of his bravery to step up and help America and to make amazing, big decisions along the way. Roosevelt was a great leader, and he served the United States very carefully to make sure that he made the right choices that were best for the country so that everything could change and be extraordinary. In addition, Franklin impacted America in many great ways since he was a great political leader and he did many great things for everyone around him. He was also the first one to help America through its rough times to help secure them. Throughout Roosevelt's life, he made some many hard choices that weren’t easy to decide; these choices impacted America in many ways, and the genres of literature can be used as a tool to learn about consequences and conflicts.

When Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to his first term as president of the United States in 1932, America was in a severe depression. When Franklin Roosevelt took office in March of 1933, President Hoover handed the problems of the Great Depression over to Roosevelt. Upon taking office, Franklin Roosevelt issued a bank holiday which forced all banks to close from March 6 to March 10 while he met with Congress to pass the Emergency Banking Act to allow banks with enough money to reopen and for the Federal Government to help the banks that did not have enough money (A Bank). Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a well-educated, controversial leader that made a lasting impression on the United States of America. He was extremely effective in office due to several strong attributes he possessed. Roosevelt was the only president to serve more than two consecutive terms in office, and he even captured a fourth term before he died. The continuous reelections would prove that Franklin Roosevelt was a man of the people for the people. Franklin Roosevelt’s leadership skills guided the United States through two major events in the country’s history. He guided the country through the Great Depression in the 1930s and the majority of World War II. Franklin Roosevelt would have a major impact on the United States economy and people. Roosevelt would create plans and programs to get the country and its people back on track during hard times. The United States would become a global super power after World War II. The leadership skills that Roosevelt utilized allowed him to become one to the greatest presidents in history. Even through Roosevelt was one of the greatest Presidents, he still had his critics that questioned the outcomes of his plans when looking at the future of the United States.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was a man who besides his intelligence, charm and strong confidence, he was able to sustain the nation through the most overbearing crisis know as the Great Depression as well as World War II. While managing to stay optimistic, Franklin Roosevelt helped people regain faith in themselves. Despite all the chaos going on at the time, “he was met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory (pg. 90).” He was praised for pushing the government to help those who were underprivileged. Theodore Roosevelt, kenned as "Teddy" or "T.R." was born in New York City, NY on October 27, 1858. From birth until his tardy teens, Roosevelt suffered greatly from asthma, was frail and sickly, and was near-sighted, which coerced him to wear glasses. His father took him for rides in the night to avail him breathe with fresh air and inspirited him to build up his body with strenuous exercises and sports in efforts to build his body and mind. In 1876, Roosevelt was accepted to Harvard College. After graduating, he decided to enter politics and in 1881, at the age of 23, he won election to the first of three terms in the Incipient York State Assembly as a Republican.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt also known as FDR was the 32nd president of the United States and is known for being one of the greatest in history. He was a democrat and the only president to be elected four times into office even though he was unable to serve his full terms; he was still able restore the economy from The Great Depression with his New Deal domestic policies. The New Deal named the four important things to America during those times which were relief, recovery and reform. Establishing programs such as the Public Works Administration and Social Security which helped Americans back to work and help give aid to elderly people. FDR would also face other problems during his presidency such as pressure to get involved in World War II. Many actions would cause America’s involvement in World War II such as the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor, USS Panay and Germany’s unrestricted use of submarine warfare.

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT In the 1930s to mid-1940s there were a lot of issues facing the people of America such as the depression, millions of people out of work, thousands of banks closing, and crops failing due to the “Dust Bowl” in the Midwest. In addition to all of this, outside the borders of the United States there were escalating foreign tensions in Europe and Asia which eventually led to World War II. With all of these problems the American people needed a visionary leader who could capitalize on the strengths of those around him and make the tough choices needed to get America back on its feet.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt became a president who inherited catastrophe for most of his presidency. Each historian has had different views on he handled many of these situations, but there have been some who have ridiculed his legacy as a president. One common ground, though, where historians can agree modestly, is on the nature of President Roosevelt. Therefor the question arises, who was President Roosevelt besides being our Commander in Chief?

Inspiration was instilled to society during the four terms U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt held office. He led the United States through the Great Depression and World War II. He was a man who symbolized change, progress, and hope and effectively restored the faith several individuals lost as a result of the depression and war. By the time Roosevelt took office in March of 1933 as the 32nd president, there were 13 million unemployed Americans, and hundreds of banks were closed. Roosevelt faced the greatest crisis in American history since the Civil War. During the economic depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s biggest goal was to get people back to work, getting them fed, sheltered, and fixing the economy. During World War II Franklin Roosevelt’s aspiration was to save the world from utter collapse. He had to persuade the Americans to help Britain and France fight against dictator Hitler. He had to deal with Japan 's demands. When they attacked he put the U.S. into the war to fight off Japan and Germany. He then worked closely with France, England and Russia to defeat the Nazis. He also had an idea to join forces with the Allies to create the United Nations. Despite the conflicts worldwide, he sought to improve the state of the American nation to one all could be proud of. When President McKinley was assassinated Vice President Theodore Roosevelt became President of the United States at the age of 43. He is the youngest president in our nation’s history. Though President Roosevelt was young with fresh ideas filled with high energy as you will see that even after he became president he continued to do some things he enjoyed in his life. Roosevelt while still in the presidency, he continued to box inside the White House. In one of those instances while sparing he spared with a Navy officer and was injured and became blind in that eye. Some might say that having this type of ideas could lead to destruction and others would say that there were social policies that were addressed because of having this type of mentality.

During a 1928 goodwill speech in Latin America, President Herbert Hoover said, “We have a desire to maintain not only the cordial relations of governments with each other, but also the relations of good neighbors” (United States History). Hence, the Good Neighbor phrase was coined as the Coolidge Administration was criticized for armed intervention in Latin America. The Hoover Administration’s policies were created to strengthen relations with Latin America; for instance the retraction of the Theodore Roosevelt’s Corollary to the 1823 Monroe Doctrine that stated only the U.S. could gather debts owned by foreigners to countries in the Western hemisphere. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the thirty-second president of the United States of America. He served three terms, the longest of any president ever. Franklin D. Roosevelt was born January 30, 1882, he fought through many challenges, and served the longest term of any president.

Historians and scholars have often debated the success and failures of Franklin Roosevelt’s presidency since 1945. A number of scholars argue that he created jobs, boosted the economy, and helped America get back onto the road of becoming a great nation. On the other hand, it can be argued that his plans and ideas to create jobs only lasted for the short term and his acts created long-term problems. This paper will discuss Roosevelt’s life, his reforms, and both the positive or negative outcome those actions had on America. However, it must be stated, for the struggles America was going through, and the perseverance they held to triumph over their trials, was in part due to Roosevelt’s boundless leadership as president.
