Discrimination in the Workplace
Imagine being restricted of certain jobs for reasons that have nothing to do with your capability to do something or your skills This is called discrimination. Discrimination is “the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex” (Oxford Dictionary). It is obvious that people have to go through this everyday just because they don’t fit the description of what society has imposed as the ideal or normal employee. It is unfair that people could have their right of getting a job just by their appearance. There is vast amount of laws passed that protect people against discrimination in the workplace and the U.S is working on decreasing these occurrences, but it seems like this issue cannot be erased completely. No one should have to experience discrimination. Although businesses and corporations sometimes do not have the choice to chose one aspect of a person over the other, there are still many reasons why people face discrimination, such as age, gender, race, and sexual orientation. These aren’t the only reasons. The list could go on and on.
Sometimes, employers don’t mean to discriminate. If an employee is looking for a certain worker who for example, needs to carry heavy items, needs to be proficient in a certain computer software, or be able to analyze statistical data, the employee will not hire someone who doesn’t meet the criteria. Why? It’s not
America has had discrimination against minorities for a long time and it will continue to have it until people treat minorities with respect. Discrimination is when people treat minorities bad because of their skin color, ethnicity and the place they were born. For immigrants, the problems they had to arrive to America were not a good experience only by the struggle to gain acceptance among the population. Most immigrants came to the U.S. to have a better life and give education to their children. Almost all immigrants have experienced discrimination at some point in their life and even some are still experiencing it today. Most Latinos don’t have a choice but to deal with it because they know they are illegal and they can’t say anything
There are lots of potential effects related to discrimination. It includes things like disempowerment, low self-esteem and self-identity and also marginalisation. I am now going to explain these effects and connect them with a case study.
Racism is defined as prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior. In the workforce, the issue of racism and discrimination has been brought to the center of conversations around the world. Companies claim to be “colorblind” and not hire somebody based on their race or gender, but the employment rates among minorities and women around the world is significantly lower than the majority in the given country. Harassment and discrimination claims are due to lack of education about the subject. As an independent human resources consultant, Santiago-Santos will organize a local education campaign and provide employers with different trainings to educate them and their employees about harassment and discrimination. Employers will have a better understanding on how to develop internal policies and procedures to address these claims. Also, trainings will be provided for employees and they will be educated on how to prevent and identify harassment and discrimination as well as what steps to take in order to report such behavior.
The case study, Is this a case of discrimination or non-performance, the author discuss the issue between Dr. George Annan, newly hired the assistant professor and Dr. Mary Reed, the department head for the Applied technology and management at Northern Plain University. Dr. Mary Reed was offered a position as the department head in August 2003. She accepted the new position and was excited to run the department. Within two years, she had a great experience working as a head of the department; however, her job got difficult when she encounters issues with African employee. Dr. George Annan was hired in August 2003 as the assistant professor in the Construction Management Program. He was the only African male professor among three White professors. Issues arise when Dr. Mary Reed observes Professor Annan’s teaching styles and other demands which seem to be problematic. However, Dr. Reed did not provide enough information to the professor Annan which makes him think that he is being discriminated. This is a case of non- performance; however, the manager took some poor steps which lead to the issues.
Before, going into this we need to look at the past discriminative policies adopted many companies, responsible for many acts of discrimination against minorities. Menial and low level jobs were offered to certain ethnic and minority groups. Even, woman was denied certain job categories on the ground of strength and their capabilities. This discriminatory policy adopted for so many decade has led to a situation where there cannot be a level playing field without taking certain affirmative action.
Abstract- Racial discrimination happens all the time and most of us are unaware of it. The most common place for this to happen is in the workplace. Now people can be discriminated against because of their race, religion, or any other numerous things. Also, discrimination can occur during the job interview or even after you got the job. This paper will shoe the effects of racial discrimination and how it can be prevented. In addition there are some very important laws that deal specifically with discrimination, like the NAACP or Affirmative Action. These both will be discussed.
In a plain sense, to discriminate means to distinguish, single out, or make a distinction. In the context of civil rights law, unlawful discrimination refers to unfair or unequal treatment of an individual or group based on certain characteristics, including but not limited to age, disability, ethnicity, gender, race, and religion (What is Discrimination, 2010, para. 1). United States law forbids discrimination when it comes to any aspect of employment, including hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits, and any other term or condition of employment (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, para. 3). Several laws and regulations have been implemented in the United States to combat discrimination and inequality in the workplace.

Women are one of the most groups being discriminated against today. They try very hard to fit in and be successful in their careers. Discrimination against women is found in many workplaces. Some managers try to fix this problem, but others just ignore it. Companies that pretend that gender discrimination doesn’t exist are usually the ones that get sued for it more often. Other companies try to avoid law suits by dealing with gender discrimination and resolving conflicts before it gets to the law suits.
“ I believe discrimination still exists in society and we must fight it in every form,” stated Andrew Cuomo. The following quote relates to the topic of appearance discrimination. Discrimination is a main issue in the world today. There are laws now that protect people against discrimination towards religion, gender, race, etc. Although there are laws to protect people, there is still discrimination going on against appearance. This type of discrimination occurs a great deal in the workplace. Employers are making policies on how they want their employees to look. This causes issues that end up being described as appearance discrimination. Appearance based discrimination in the workplace is wrong because it can cause severe health issues, can ruin employment chances for people, and cause unequal salaries and promotions, even in jobs that do not even have requirements about appearance.
Why should anyone be discriminated in the workplace? Working people in today’s society should know discrimination is immoral! Sadly, many working people are not righteous; therefore, discrimination is still an ongoing problem. Discrimination prevention program training has been developed; basically teaching working adults how to be fair.
