Our society have been longed plagued by the question, are we able to achieve a "Color Blind Society." There are a number of factors which may contribute to the breakdown of this idea in question. While it may be simply addressing issues of equality among minorities it also raises the concerns of the non-minorities not to address racism and oppression. For a minority or anyone for that matter to state that we can and should have a color-blind society is ignoring the reality of racial existence and ignorance.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was noted with a myth of having this vision. In his "I have a Dream Speech," a statement which stands out in everybody's mind is "To be judged not by the color our of skin but for the content of our

To free our society of these recognitions is to deny these individuals admiration for opening the doors of others to achieve the same aspirations in life.
The root of existing racism resides within the practices of stereotypes. Stereotypes have been formed over many years by using a fact or the truth and distorting its idea's in a demeaning way to generalize others. As long as stereotypes exists then racism will continue, and as long as racism continues there can never be a color-blind society. Stereotyped views remain by the use of the oppressors as a way of not having to educate or acknowledge how the effects of racism have altered the state of minorities socially, economically, and psychologically. For some, it is easy to hold on to stereotypes rather than invite the blame of the oppressor. For this reason, there is a misunderstanding of blame and oppression.
While forceful segregation has not remained distinct, there continues to be a problem with institutional racism in the schools, communities, workforce, and jail systems. Schools are affected by the communities which separate districts a majority of the time by race. When urban communities are left behind from prosperous industries, the people are often left jobless and in poverty.

In his essay “Still Separate, Still Unequal: America’s Educational Apartheid,” Jonathan Kozol brings our attention to the apparent growing trend of racial segregation within America’s urban and inner-city schools (309-310). Kozol provides several supporting factors to his claim stemming from his research and observations of different school environments, its teachers and students, and personal conversations with those teachers and students.
In his article, “Still Separate, Still Unequal: America’s Educational Apartheid”, Jonathan Kozol points out, whether we are aware or not, how American public schools are segregated. Schools that were segregated twenty-five to thirty years ago are still segregated, and schools that had been integrated are now re-segregating. The achievement gap between black and white students, after narrowing for a few decades, started to widen once again in the early 1990s when federal courts got rid of the mandates of the Brown decision and schools were no longer required to integrate.
Racism throughout time has had a powerful negative force in society. There have been many efforts made to relieve racism. Racism is still present in America, although many people are doing their best to put a stop to racism and its somewhat devastating effects on young black males in society. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee) The negative stereotypes and racial profiling that Americans hand down from generation to generation are damaging not only to the minorities but to those perpetuating them as well. This case was about segregation of public schools but before this was to be found unconstitutional, the school system in Kansas and all over the United States had segregated schools. Institutional racism has solidified its position into various aspects of American society. It has installed itself into employment practices, all levels of education, healthcare, housing, politics and the criminal justice system. Institutional racism has made some subtle changes to replace the boldness of slavery and Jim Crow. However, in educational institutions the effects of racism and discrimination are so delicate they typically go unnoticed by students of color. Individual racism usually happens on the personal level where the prejudice is expressed either consciously or unconsciously while there is some form of interpersonal encounter.
