This seems to be a common issue among society, which cannot be avoided no matter what actions are taken. It seems to affect people everywhere and a majority of the population today. This is tobacco, which is a frequently used drug that can be purchased by anyone, that is of age of course, but with most gas stations these days, it seems just looking the age, or even having a good relationship with the clerk qualifies you as eligible to use it. What is the purpose to use it though? For some it is a stress reliever, a bad habit never broken that was developed at a younger stage, or it was just common to see someone smoking and to follow that path. With every bargain comes a cost though, as with smoking or even chewing tobacco, you are …show more content…
9/10 cigarette smokers in the world today, started to smoke by the age of 18 or even before (Prevention). Just imagine how many friends a kid today has, and that person does not even know that some of their closest friends is a daily cigarette smoker or tobacco user. What makes using tobacco for teenagers so popular? It is due to the fact that most teenagers are around and influenced, peer pressured to do it. Also advertisers and tobacco companies are starting to get smart so that they can sell more products. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says “Flavoring in tobacco products can make them more appealing to the youth” (Prevention) which is true. Think of it as in comparison to your favorite soda, for example Coca Cola, while the have the original product of it from when it was first created. The producers have also made different flavors of it, so that it can appeal to more people and that will lead to more sales. In 2014, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention again “73% of high school students and 56% of middle schools students who used tobacco products in the past 30 days reported using a flavored tobacco product during that time.” (Prevention) While rates of smoking cigarettes has decreased in the US Youth from 2011 to 2014, the creation of other tobacco uses like Electronic Cigarettes, Hookahs, and smokeless tobacco has however increased, because it
According to “The Action of Smoking and Health,” every six seconds someone loses their life as a result of a tobacco related disease. It’s hard to realize how damaging cigarette smoking’s effect can be until you experience it first hand. It is almost certain that every one knows someone who is currently a smoker or was a smoker at some point in their life. For years smoking was the seen as the “cool” thing to do, it was how to “fit in.” There was no real emphasis placed on the dangers of this particular habit, and as a result, it became a world wide trend. In the past, technology and medicine were not nearly advanced enough to be able to determine just how harmful tobacco usage is. However, as we have made medical and
Cigarette companies use trends, age, culture, and other things to hook a person to their product. The companies mainly target teens because of their ignorance and teens who get addicted that young will likely be customers for life. Tobacco is promoted on almost every television network and 1/3 of adolescent experimentation with smoking results from the advertising. (Tobacco Free Broome and Tioga) Not only are cigarettes promoted on TV, but their promoted throughout everyone’s lifestyle. Maybe a role model you have, maybe one of your parents, or maybe a celebrity you enjoy following... any one of these people could smoke and the mindset of many is, “if they’re doing it, so can I”. Mike Magee smoked his first L&M cigarette when he nine years old, his parents smoked and kept cigarettes in the house and therefore they were accessible. He and his siblings said that learning how to smoke was
Tobacco has been around in the world for over 2.5 million years. It was not until a few hundred years ago when the tobacco industry decided to put these crops into use and conjure up tobacco products for the community. A popular tobacco product in society is cigarettes, as they are cheap and simple to use. As long as one is over eighteen, acquiring cigarettes is a straightforward process for a reasonable price, albeit the sin tax. It was not until recently when cigarettes became widely controversial due to the plant containing nicotine, an addictive drug to the body. Aside from containing nicotine and other hazardous chemicals to the body, cigarettes also cause a whole host of health implications
Everyone should know that smoking cigarettes is a bad habit and is dangerous for the user's health. Yet, these cancer causing, teeth yellowing, bad breath causing cigarettes are still being smoked everyday by people all over the world. It used to be seen as cool to smoke and it seemed like everyone did it. Like a fashion fad, smoking cigarettes soon became out of style. People still smoke, but not as much as they used to. In 2003 electronic cigarettes were first introduced the United States as a safer alternative, making smoking or vaping, as its called now, a cool fad again. Smoking had been at an all time low until recently when alternatives to traditional smoking such electronic cigarettes or hookah have become popular especially among the younger generation(Rifkin para. 2). Many smokers are now using electronic cigarettes over traditional
Throughout the course of this project finding credible sources was challenging at times. My question going in was “Why are children to appealed to tobacco” conducting research regarding that question I found numerous different answers. One answer I didn’t find surprising at all was that children are more appealed to tobacco due to the different kinds of flavors that are on the market. Swisher cigars are flavored and can smell the scent of the flavor as well. Now when a sixteen or seventeen year old gets ahold of those things they’re going to be more attracted to it due to the flavoring. Another possible answer that I believed was most accurate to my question is that children are exposed to tobacco products through numerous different ways. Celebrities
The only reason that these types of e-cigs are in existence is because they appeal to younger individuals who associate these flavors with other things they enjoy, like gum and candy. People are being conditioned into thinking that electronic cigarettes will bring them the same happiness that these child-like flavors have done for them in the past. This illustrates that marketing has already negatively impacted the health of younger users. “A recent JAMA [Journal of the American Medical Association] Pediatrics study found that middle and high-school students who used e-cigarettes were more likely to smoke traditional cigarettes and less likely to quit smoking.” This same phenomenon showed that individuals who start out using electronic cigarettes, eventually want to try the real thing. They become addicted just because of their curiosity of the flavored products that got them to start using electronic cigarettes. These flavored products that are being sold to minors should not be allowed on the market because they have already caused younger people to become curious about smoking and using nicotine based products.
although the rate for teens smoking has dropped another concern is rising and that is e-cigarrette. by foxnews defination e-cigarettes are eollectronic battery-powered devices that contain vaporize nicotine but no tobacco. It is a on the rise rise A monks amongst teens because it is being adveetise as safer in regular cigarettes and "cool". What interests me about this topic is because smoking has become excepted as a regular daily activity for most most American even with the known danger that comes with it. Even though the rate for teens smokin has dropped public health advocate are still concerned that it can level off due to e-cigarette's because teens believe light smoking is less harmful to them and they can quit whenever they want. smoking is a leading cause of preventable death in the United States. biology and developmental vulnerability are the few partially reason given. Biology studies shows that, until in their 20s and adolescents Brain is not equate enough to measure and assess assess race and long-term
A High school student starts off with just trying a cigarette, then started smoking just about one cigarette a day, then became addict, he ended up smoking for 30 years, he developed throat cancer and had to breathe through a surgically made hole in his neck for the rest of his life. Just trying tobacco as a teen increases your chances by 80 percent of being addicted to some kind of tobacco in your future as being an adult (Bratsis Michael E). Teen and even children are trying tobacco products earlier and earlier every year. Tobacco products are becoming more advanced for example: the E-Cig. Tobacco producers are coming up with new way to put nicotine into your body. Having this teens want to try the new, non-researched, tobacco
Wht if I told you that over 23% of high school students use tobacco products, but more than 90% of those students smoke cigarettes? Some of the teens will get addicted to the ewrnicotine and will smoke one right after the other and won't stop until they die or until they get a disease. Most teens don't know that cigarettes are not healthy fordsf your body a single cigarette contains over four thousand chemicals and at least 50 are known. Some teens do it to change their self image and others do it because of peer pressure and maybe curious and want to try it. Smoking cigarettes causes a health issue such as getting a heart attack, high blood pressure, and strokes.
Advertising for tobacco is another source that cause teenagers smoke and adults smoke. Recently, tobacco companies have found new ways to promote their products to youth. They support their sporting events, concerts and movie. Many people favor idols or stars smoke in the movies and they seems very cool. And Teenagers are curious about imitation. Smoke containing nicotine acts as a stimulant to the brain. Nicotine in the bloodstream acts to make the smoker feel calm. In fact, nicotine is a lethal poison, affecting the heart, blood vessels, and hormones. Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds. More than 60 of these are known or suspected to cause cancer. What is more, secondhand smoke can be harmful in many ways and it ruins thousands of non-smoking people, children's health. The US Surgeon General and the US Food and Drug Administration are among those who have examined the evidence and concluded that tobacco advertising does increase overall consumption. If we ban adverts on tobacco products, they will gradually lose their appeal, because they won't symbolize anything "cool", "smart" or "amazing". Tobacco products will become ordinary consumption goods and thus the number of young people who take up smoking in order to "be somebody" will decrease.
In our society, there has been several issues but one of the main concerns is what has been going on in the African American community. Police Brutality is a major problem that many African Americans fear dealing with racial divides but some believe minorities cause higher crime rates. In the dictionary of law, Police brutality, is the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. Many Americans have gone through many situations where they were excessively force by the police. But few American’s were racial profiled, discriminated, or beat brutality for no appointed reason.
Teenage smoking can be a result of the influence of other teens, or maybe the amount of peer pressure. This can cause a teen to want to smoke or even think about smoking (Alcid, Arthur, page 1). Statistics show that 794 student and 22.4 percent of teens claimed to be tobacco users. (Alcid, Arthur, page 1). Teens tend to be more abrasive when smoking, and seem to act different while smoking and once they have gotten into the habit of smoking make it a constant thing. In 2003, 21.9 percent of high school students currently smoke cigarettes (Alcid, Arthur, page 1).
To make matters worse, the tobacco companies are making millions from teen smokers. Tobacco companies use advertising to manipulate both teens and adults. They present images that are hard to shake, even when you know the truth. Have you ever seen a cigarette ad where people are wrinkled, middle-aged or coughing and in the hospital dying of lung cancer? Of course not! In most ads, smokers are shown the way that teens would like to be: attractive and hip, sophisticated and elegant, or rebellious.
Tobacco; one of the most profitable products in history, an addictive substance, and a deadly killer. Smoking tobacco used to be a thing that was endorsed in American society. Now, with the new medical advances and knowledge, society has seen the side effects of smoking and how fatal it actually is. Teenagers have been one of the largest age groups that have been affected by smoking. After analyzing all possible reasons as to why teenagers would smoke while knowing it can affect their health, three possible reasons stuck out the most. Teenagers smoke despite knowing the health problems that originate from smoking because of peer pressure, an “invincibility” mentality, and seeing a role model or family member smoke.
But lowering the tar also meant lowering the nicotine because this method affected both aspects. So the industry generated a new breed of tobacco plants. The nicotine levels of the new flue-cured, Y-1, and rustica tobacco plants were 6% of the plant’s body weight. Before, tobacco only had 2%-3.5% nicotine. Chewing tobacco and snuff products have always contained fiberglass in them. These flecks of glass pierced gums and lips to allow nicotine to flow into the pores making it more addictive. The industry has since made the fiberglass obsolete and replaced it with actual nicotine crystals. These crystals penetrate the gums and dissolve inside of your jaw. Basically, consumers are now getting approximately double the nicotine in smoking and smokeless tobacco than had previously. The government has passed laws that prevent youth from purchasing tobacco goods. The legal age for acquirement of tobacco is 18. Does that in itself ward away potential teen tobacco users? To a certain degree, it works very effectively. Consumers under the legal age have no way around this law. However, there are some marketers that sell to underage tobacco users. But the industry is hardly to blame for that. The President devised a plan to raise prices of tobacco over the next four years in an attempt to discourage tobacco consumers. Realistically, no proposition such as that could ever be more ignorant and bemused. This scheme only gives rise to the industry. More profit for the tobacco unit
