You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. James 4:2-3
This passage centers upon fulfilling the desires stemming from our needs, real or imagined. Caught up in sin, we lust for things we need or desire, but we cannot obtain it. No matter how strong the effort, if we seek our own desires instead of godly desires, we will not achieve what we hope to accomplish. We will forever crave and reach without receiving fulfillment.
The problem does not lie in seeking, as if desire itself betrays us. God wants us to seek godliness. The living seek. We strive to meet the needs that God created us

Sometimes, religiously-minded people look at the word to meet their desires and still do not find the answers. We look to find support for our needs, but the problem is that our ideas are what we seek. So we "ask" and do not receive, because we "ask amiss". To "ask amiss" means that we are seeking wisdom from the Bible, but we are not actually looking for what the Bible says. We are seeking God's approval for our own desires and plans.
How is that possible? Paul mentioned this in 2 Timothy 3:5 where he wrote of people who had "a form of godliness" yet deny its power. That is, they look at the Bible and follow it to a degree, but they do not trust its power to help them. They seek answers from the Bible to support their own agendas and plans. Thus, they gain support from others by pointing to and twisting passages of Scripture to fit their agendas, and then salve their own conscience in the same way.
We might think that people would never intentionally do this, but it happens constantly. People practice such things without giving it a second thought, and, I am convinced, without even realizing they are doing
The theme of desire has been portrayed in many novels and stories. Perhaps the most well-known depiction of desire can be found in the Bible. In the Book of Genesis, a snake tempts Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge after he convinces them that they will gain God’s knowledge of good and evil and be protected from death. Despite God’s word to not eat of the fruit, Adam and Eve did so anyway. Surely, this story portrays temptation; however, beyond the theme of temptation lays the theme of desire. Knowing it was wrong, Adam and Eve ate the fruit because they had the desire for what the snake promised them. Similarly, Toni Cade Bambara and John Updike also display the theme of desire in their short stories. In
Desire is a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen. Desire can take a hold of us in our lives and make us only focus on it. In both the books Where Things Come Back and Everything,Everything they have a desire for something more in their lives.
Man’s biggest flaw is its weakness in the face of temptation because temptation also lies in its heart. Man’s free will is inherently corrupted by the temptations of life and the world. While free will pushed man’s creativity to what seems to be a limitless boundary, it has also played a part in man’s own undoing. Man’s undoing lies in their ego and desire for self-gratification and self-glorification. They constantly strive to expand their presence and knowledge so much so that it seems to know no bounds. However even with man’s ambition it is all subject to God’s
temptations that will indefinitely, if acted upon, draw them further from the light of the Lord. In
Chapter four was a difficult read mostly because it describes in great detail our natural sin nature and our tendencies to naturally disconnect from God’s intention for our lives. The authors start out the chapter discussing what sin is, or as the authors put it “we are a mixture of good and evil” (Grenz and Smith, 60). As humans, we miss the mark of what God intends for all Christians, which is to live in community and make the conscience choice to be Christ-like in all of our dealings and encounters with humankind. Instead, born in sin, we can quickly find ourselves making moral choices that causes us to sin. This comes from an innermost desire for something or someone that we give control over to and inevitably become
Lust, which is rejecting and taking brought up by the author in this passage when they say, “Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God” (New Testament 364). Right from the passage we see lust in the humans rejecting God’s people. God’s people are challenged to be loving to all, even those who are lustful towards them.
The hours that we spent in prayer asking from God, if such is spent in praise and worshipping chances are we will stand a better chance of receiving from our Heavenly Father.
Albeit some people have attained their desires but still lack of pursuits make their life still and makes them feel dead inside. Thus pursuit of your desire compels you to live and fight for your dreams.
A woman’s lust can either define her or break her, but a man’s lust can either hold him or deceive him. Considering the movie Gone with The Wind, the main tragedy story between Scarlett and Rhett Butler is the saddest one in the movie. On the other hand, an artist named Vector did a painting that represent the same theme as Gone With The Wind. Both represent the theme of don’t go looking for love, if love is already there. Vector showed a part of the movie that showed the theme more powerfully than then the
Paul's is basically repeating himself here as if saying: "abundantly, abundantly." The motto of the country of Spain is: "Further Beyond." I wonder if they came up with this sailing to the New WOrld. Indeed, we can learn a lot about God's plans fro us in the Bible, but God has so much more in store for us than we can even comprehend or read about. Concerning everything we could "ask" we can ask for quite a bit! We sometimes pray: "Lord, I want a million dollars, and a brand new car." Well, that's not exactly what God is teaching here. How about opportunities to reach the lost? Prayers for patience? Prayers for wisdom? We can "think" quite a few things as well: Can God really help me through this temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13)? Is God going to be there for me through the hard times (Psalm 23)? Will He provided for my needs (Matthew 6:31-33)? Finally, the verse in Ephesians says: "according to the power that works within us." Its kind of scary to think of God working in us. We have a boss in Heaven, and He expects us to work for Him. Yet He's the best and He'll help us go far beyond
Desire is a consuming force that causes the body to act without consulting the mind. Sappho’s fragments in, If Not, Winter, creates experiences in which; eros produces a gap between the subject and the desired object. Eros is composed of the powerful, unconstrained forces of desire, attraction, and love. The use of syntax, simile, and overt symbolism within fragment 105A; allows Sappho’s readers to experience the uncontrollable forces of desire and attraction, which govern a person who is yearning after an individual that can never be obtained. This yearning further develops into need; where eros has complete control over the subject, and advances into madness. This ultimately creates a tangible distance between the subject and the object she desires, because the object may not reciprocate the same feelings toward the subject. In this paper, I will argue that as time passes, the longing after an unattainable person increasingly progresses, in stages, until madness overpowers the mind of the desiring individual.
Lust is the leading cause of divorce, abortion, and breaks the sacred bond between a man and his wife, which ultimately leads to sin. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) who provides data and statistics linked to abortion, “in 2011, 730,322 legal induced abortions were reported to CDC from 49 reporting areas.” Due to lust, premarital and unprotected sex are occurring more and more often causing unwanted pregnancies. In Hebrews 13:4 it states, “Give honor to marriage and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.” Sex in marriage is a gift from God and is a sacred bond between a man and his wife.

It seems humans never can truly be satisfied with one thing. Mankind will seek out something they crave and once they achieve it, the meaning isn’t as important as it once was. Whether they desire sex, money, love, joy, or good health, as humans we each crave something so deep it far outweighs a hope or want. In today’s time, no one ever seems to be satisfied with what they have. We are always looking for something more. You search and strain for that one goal and as soon as you reach it, it’s on to the next. So with the value of one thing decreasing, the desire of another is increasing. The fluidity of a desire never ceases. With this being said, one can define desire as a multitude of things. To each
