The science-fiction film, Star Wars, has a had a significant impact on modern culture today as it relates to Greek mythology and religion. The popular film created by George Lucas uses many symbols to demonstrate the similarities between the movie and culture, such as the Tusken Raiders and the Nio. Fortunately, Star Wars stays open to all religions, allowing for different interpretations of all characters. The concepts presented in the movie allow for all viewers to further their knowledge of religion and understand the past in a more logical way.
A similarity between Star Wars and religion are heralds and R2-D2. A herald was someone who carried a message, sometimes causing an adventure to begin. In the religion of Christianity, Matthew was a herald because he shared how Jesus, rejected by Israel, sent the disciples to preach the gospel to the world. In Star Wars, R2-D2 delivered the message that Princess Leia was in trouble and she needed help from Obi Wan Kenobi. This lead Luke Skywalker on an adventure to figure out who Obi Wan Kenobi was and why Princess Leia was in trouble. Therefore, both heralds and R2-D2 represent the messengers needed in order for a quest to unfold.
Another comparison between Star Wars and religion are the Nio and the Tusken Raiders. According to Japanese tradition, the Nio were a group of guards that protected the Buddhist temples from those trying to enter.
