Working environment diversity is a standout amongst the most key components that any business and partnership must have and use. The United States is constantly changing and evolving as the past ways are just not same as today. A demographic shift has taken place and is projected to continue with increased diversity in our population. The various sorts of work environment differing qualities are what make people work so well both as a public and as compelling organizations. The reason to having a various working environment is to grow the information and experience of all that are inside that organization. These differences viewpoints are what make an effective and very working workplace. Different working environment is basic since it encapsulates an assemblage of every single human thought, societies and foundations put into an innovative and ground breaking gathering of people. The shift in diversity has been obvious in the workplace as many companies are realizing the benefits of being diverse and understanding the history of the lack of diversity problem. Before we move on it is important to take the time and think what diversity means to your organization. How does your company define diversity? A simple definition of diversity is that every individual is unique, and has differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, mental abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, personality, cognitive style, or other ideologies. It is when there is a value placed on the variety of ideas, race, ethnicities, religion, gender, sexuality and orientation, which is flourishing in an environment. Depending on your employer and workplace, workplace diversity can vary based off several different factors. Usually, there is a preferential standpoint taken on the matter and it can be either display a high or a low context culture of diversity. According to Mason (2013) Workforce diversity has been described as “a double-edged sword; it has the potential for positive and negative outcomes” (p.659). Workplace diversity is important in a business setting because it carries forward a combination of different types of people to work together in unity, encourages uniqueness, innovative, creative approaches, and supports interesting divergent ideas to accomplish tasks or goals.
Diversity – In the literal sense the word ‘diversity’ means different. Through diversity we recognise the uniqueness of the individual and value these differences. Diversity can consist of factors which include personal characteristics such as background, culture, personality and work-style. However, certain characteristics are protected under discrimination such as gender, sexuality, religion, ethnicity, disability and age.
Organizations are made up of man & woman, many cultures & races, and multiple generations. Some of the organizations are also comprised of disable employees. This is what we called diversity. Diversity is something that has been around in the organizations for decades. Diversity in Collins Dictionary means, the state or quality of being different or varied and range of different things. It is synonyms to variety, mixture, range, and multiplicity. According to Queensborough Community College in its website define diversity as “Understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. Diversity can somehow affect the employees and can be challenges to the managers.
Those that go into the business world quickly recognize that each work environment they find themselves in can be total different from another. This can especially be said even of environments within the United States, from region to region. There is definitely a disparity of workplace environments from country to country. Not only can culture drive a varied atmosphere, but the diversity of the personnel making up that environment can equally create a challenge that a leader must be prepared to manage. Recognizing that special care needs to be placed on communication and perception skills is crucial in our present professional domain. Managers of today need to employee tools from the psychological and sociological field to be successful. Having a deep understanding in the differences in culture and diversity in the workplace is critical, especially when debating about accepting a position overseas or assigning an employee to an embedded position abroad. With a broad knowledge of cultural differences and diversity, success as a manager and the stability of a positive work environment can be achieved and maintained without unnecessary effort and focus.
The discussion of week five emphasized the importance of communication when implementing changes in a work environment. In week five we also discussed the two management theories and the benefits of applying these theories in a manager roll. Week five’s topic is very relatable to our teams work environment, understanding the definition of diversity is crucial in the success of a manger and company goals. Diversity comes in many different shapes and forms, companies use diversity to their advantage, and should promote diversity to build a strong working culture in support of the company’s values and mission. Understanding the benefits of a diverse work environment is essential to business leaders.
