Narcissistic Personality disorder is a disorder in which a person has an over-inflated sense of self importance. Symptoms can include an excessive need for admiration, the inability to handle criticism, and a sense of entitlement. The grandmother in ‘A Good Man Is Hard To Find’ demonstrates the characteristics of someone who has narcissistic personality disorder by her ways of manipulation, self-centeredness, and lack of empathy towards others.
Throughout the entire story, it’s crystal clear that the grandmother doesn’t care about how her actions will affect her family. The only thing that concerns her is her own life, and no one else's. Her ego is highly inflated to the point where she comes off as exceptionally arrogant and unpleasant. She refers to herself as a classy lady who is respectful, and a faithful Christian. When the Misfit is pointing a gun to her she proclaims, “You wouldn’t shoot a lady would you?”(O’Connor). From the start, it’s not hard for readers to tell that the grandmother is racist, which just adds to the list of reasons of why the reader won't like this character. What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘grandmother’? You should be thinking something along the lines of how grandmothers are loving, selfless, and caring towards their children and grandchildren. A typical grandmother loves to spoil their grandchildren, and do anything they can to help them succeed and be happy. As seen in the story, this is not the case for this particular grandmother. The grandmother really couldn’t care less about her family, and she wants everything to happen her way, and her way only. For example, when Bailey specifically says not to bring the cat along, she disregards what he says, and sneaks the cat into the car anyway.
