Imagine being at school one day then the teacher getting interrupted by gunshots. RUN, that's all he hears as the gunshots slowly start fading away. Salva is a character in Linda Sue Park's novel, A Long Walk to Water who is an 11 year old boy on a constant struggle to escape the war with his uncle and finding food and water on the way, while also being stuck in refugee camps, needing to find water and trying to complete his biggest goal, finding his family. The factors that helped salva survive the harsh environment were his self reliance, perseverance, and lastly his leadership qualities. Throughout the novel Salva’s self reliance keeps him moving through the harsh environment of southern sudan. He has no family, friends, or anyone at all to provide for him for any food or water until he fortunately runs into a group. It was very lucky for him to find that group because not to long before that the old woman had left because the war was too dangerous. A quote that shows this is “In the fading light he could see the faces of those nearest him. Two of the men had patterns of V-shaped scars on their foreheads. Dinka patterns again-the kind that were given to the boys in salva’s village as part of the ritual of becoming a man”(Park,19). The V-shaped scar patterns on men's foreheads are those from the Dinka. Salva is Dinka and they could be from the same tribe. If they were not a Dinka tribe they might not let him in there group and might even kill him. That is how salva has
In the book “A long walk to water” authored by linda sue park, salva has to go on a personal journey to survive and it impacted him majorly. What is a personal journey? One might ask. Well a personal journey is when someone or something goes on a journey and on their journey they go along and meet allies and friends, they have struggles or obstacles, and they change (mostly in a good way) throughout the story. One lesson this story suggests is that “Sometimes the pain and struggles that you encounter will help you succeed”. In the story “A long walk to water”. Salva went on a personal journey and it impacted him drastically. He had to get away from the war in sudan and he met many people that helped him, he had many conflicts and struggles, and he even witnessed his uncle passing away. But when things were at his worst he found a miracle.
In the novel, it states, “A lion had been hungry enough to approach the group as they slept…It sought out pray that was small and motionless: Marial, sleeping” (Park 41). Thus proves, that Salva was lucky that he wasn't eaten by a fierce lion when he was sound asleep, though he could have easily been eaten just like Marial. Salva rested for the night near Uncle Jewiir who would protect them from predators. On the other hand Marial slept further away from Salva and Uncle so he was vulnerable and was easily eaten by a lion. Additionally, the text states, “Stunned, Salva realized that being forced under the water have probably saved his life” (Park 78). This illustrates that when Salva was attempting to swim across the Gilo River, a boy cling to his neck and quickly forced Salva under water without warning him. Soon the boy was shot in the back of the neck, being pushed under water saved Salva from being shot and killed while crossing the Gilo River He was one of the few lucky refugees to survive crossing the crocodile-infested stream, though any of them could have easily been shot, drowned by the current or eaten by the flesh hungry crocodiles. Salva had survived many of the dangerous events by pure luck, his skills, and personal traits had no involvement when surviving some of the
In A Long Walk to Water, Linda Sue Park tells a story about one out of a thousand Southern Sudan lost boys named, Salva. Salva is a boy who ran away during the Southern Sudanese War. Salva moves from country to country to get away from this war. During the war he loses touch of his family. Salva soon escapes the war, now he’s trying to find his way to safety. Salva was able to survive In A Long Walk to Water, by having bravery, courage, and showing grit.
It took 648 miles to walk from Southern Sudan to Ethiopia. Salva did this on an empty stomach with no food or water. Do you think you would survive in a 100 degree weather with no food or water, with the same cloths that you been wearing for a year? Because salva did. In the book “A Long Walk to Water” written by Linda Sue park, she talks about Salva's journey that took years and years to get to safety after the war stated. The war came to his village while he was in school he had to run to the bush with not knowing where is his family or even knowing if they are alive. Salva was running from the war for 24 years before he finally found safety in the united states. He was 11 when he started to run, he met a friend along the way but he sadly died due to being eaten by a lion. He also meant his uncle along the way which help Salva gain confidence that he was going to make it out alive, but again the uncle passed away due to three men shooting him, because he was trying to keep everyone safe. In this essay I am going to prove that we can learn to never give up even if things are at the worst point possible and if you take things one step at a time you will get through whatever you are struggling with. The key aspects I am going to be talking about are how did Salva learn never give up and even when salva is at his worst he never gives up and still has hope that he is going to make it out alive. My first body paragraph I am explaining how salva never gave up.
Don’t let people misunderstand you by you age and bringing you down.“He is too young to do any real work, he will be no help to us.”(Park 21)The other villagers think that Salva will slow them down because he is too young. They want to leave him, alone. Salva feels sad and he feels unwanted. It makes him feel like he cannot do anything. “One step at a time. One day at a time. Just today, just this day to get through.”(Park, 77)Salva is thinking of ways to keep going and believing in himself, not letting anything bring him down so he can accomplish. So he can accomplish being somewhere safe and finding his family.Salva didn't let them misunderstand him just by his age and being brave. So he kept on showing them how wrong they were for thinking that he couldn’t do it and proved them all worn when he grew up and went to the United States.
The Second Sudanese Civil War was an intense battle between the central Sudanese government and the Sudan Liberation army. The extensive fight lasted 22 years, one of the longest civil wars in history. Many people in Sudan were affected during this hard time, including Nya and Salva. In the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, the theme is perseverance. Salva faces many bumps in the road becoming one of the “lost boys” of Sudan, but he works through all of his issues while trying to stay positive.
After reading the novel and accounts of the experiences of the people of Southern Sudan during and after the Second Sudanese Civil War, write an essay that addresses the theme of survival by answering the question: What factors made survival possible for Salva in A Long Walk to Water?
Salva had a positive attitude to survive.when he was in the u.s he didn’t forget about the people in sudan.Which made him want to get clean water for them and he did. When the war took him away from family,he still hoped he would see them again. Which encouraged to continue walking,so later on he could see his family.
The story “A Long Walk To Water” by Linda Sue Park, took place in the years 1985 to 2009. A theme that comes up in the story is survival. In the story, Salva is one of the characters that faces the theme. Many things helped him survive, but the most important factor in his survival is his uncle. Linda Sue Park shows that Salva survived because of the help his uncle gave him along the way, he survived with the help the lady he called auntie offered him when she gave him shelter in the barn and helped him join a group to stay away from war. His survival in the story was also shown when the boy brought him down in the river almost drowning him but ended up saving his life.
Imagine if you had to survive swimming in crocodile infested water or even sleeping in lion territory. Savla has gone through multiple task to survive in the wild to later then help other people by giving them a water supply.Linda Sue Park’s book A Long Walk to Water, Salva has survived because of his connections, perseverance, and luck.
In Linda Sue Park’s A Long Walk to Water, the characters teach readers that one with hope and persistence will go far in life. Salva and his tribe continue to face the same problems over and over again, like the challenges the war brings, success, or even the loss of close family and friends. Show the readers that each time they succeed is a miracle. The characters actions and opinions towards the struggles they face, makes it clear to the readers what the main idea is in the novel, A Long Walk to Water.
When war threatened villages in Sudan, so many people were forced to leave their homes and families behind. That's just what Salva had to do one dreadful day while at school. A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park is a story about a young boy named Salva, who lives in Sudan. He had to grow up with war going on around him, and had to walk away from it all. Salva even had to leave his whole family behind in trade for safety. Throughout all his struggles Salva stayed strong and has become what we know as a survivor. All the loss of his loved ones, challenges in the wilderness, and him being able to adapt to new situations are all great examples on why Salva would be considered a survivor.
One example of a survival quote from Salva was; “They went in the opposite direction from the rebels for wherever they went, there was sure to be fighting.” I think this is a survival quote because Salva has to find food, water, and shelter to survive. They also were in danger from the rebels and dangerous animals. They had to cross the Nile River and Akoboo Desert.
A long walk to water by Linda Sue Park is about survival because the two main characters Salva and Nya are trying to survive in one country, Sudan, in two different timelines 1980s and 2000s. My definition of survival is like crossing the border by foot or getting lost somewhere. According to wiki the definition is the state or fact of continuing to live or exist, typically in spite of an accident, ordeal, or difficult circumstances. A quote from the book is “No one shared anything with salva, neither food nor company”.
The second survival factor that made survival possible for Salva was Uncle Jewiir’s advice. Not only was his advice a survival factor, but he himself was a survival factor. While Salva was crossing the desert in chapter 7 he found himself losing hope. But Uncle Jewiir didn’t let that happen. He made sure to stay by Salva’s side when he needed somebody for comfort and he gave advice. According to chapter 7 (page 41), it states that “If it hadn’t been Uncle, Salva might have gone crazy with fear. Uncle spoke to him all morning in a steady, low voice.” This shows us that Salva was afraid of the lions and he needed someone to comfort him. This also shows that without Uncle Jewiir Salva would probably be long gone. It also says in chapter 9 (page 53) that “As if by magic, Uncle was suddenly at his side. “Salva Mawien Dut Ariik!” he said, using Salva’s full name, loud and clear. Salva lifted his head, the sobs interrupted by surprise. “Do you see that group of bushes?” Uncle said, pointing. You need to only walk as far as those bushes. Can you do that, Salva Mawien Dut Ariik?” This shows us that Uncle Jewiir’s advice helped him a lot and what Uncle was trying to imply to Salva was to take a step at a time instead of taking it all in one time. Not only did Uncle Jewiir’s advice help now, but years later too. He was
