A long walk to water by Linda Sue Park is about survival because the two main characters Salva and Nya are trying to survive in one country, Sudan, in two different timelines 1980s and 2000s. My definition of survival is like crossing the border by foot or getting lost somewhere. According to wiki the definition is the state or fact of continuing to live or exist, typically in spite of an accident, ordeal, or difficult circumstances. A quote from the book is “No one shared anything with salva, neither food nor company”. Another quote from salva is “They think I am weak and useless, they are wrong and I’ll prove it”. In the first quote the uncle had just died and no one gave him comfort or food and he was going to be strong and show them
In the novel, A Long Walk to Water, the author teaches us about the effects of the war in Sudan, both physically and mentally. The rebels striked all of the people into a state of intimidation, due to how they abide by them for the most part. And if somebody does step out of line, they use violent tactics according to page 12 when the man was hid in the face with the but of a gun from the rebel. Another example of the intimidation was with the woman in chapter 3, she did seem to want to take Salva with her, but could not due to the rebels intimidation. She knew that the rebels would kill them due to the two interacting, the rebels would assume that this was suspicious. The reason why the people kept running and walking was because of the
Factors that made survival possible for Salva in a long walk to water were family/friends,helpful people, and basic needs. These factors made survival possible for him since his family and friends he met had motivated him to continue on his journey, helpful people were the most helpful on the journey they may have gave him something that was the most useful, and basic needs were the most important things but were the things everyone needed to have such as a gourd which was a simple but an important product to carry water.
Salva keeps going even though he was devastated when he lost his friend Marial. Salva explained the loss of his friend as: “A cold fist seemed to grip Salva’s heart”(pg 38). He also kept going even though his uncle was shot dead. His beloved uncle who protected him, guided him, and loved him, was gone. “Now that Salva was without Uncle’s care and protection, the group’s attitude toward him changed”(pg 65). Salva faces traumatic events while crossing the river, he watches people get shot and killed. Later, Salva learned that thousands had died trying to cross the river, either drowned or shot or attacked by crocodiles (pg 79). After crossing the river only a few boys were alive, so Salva led the young boys to shelter. The boys kept walking, and walking till they found a safe
It took 648 miles to walk from Southern Sudan to Ethiopia. Salva did this on an empty stomach with no food or water. Do you think you would survive in a 100 degree weather with no food or water, with the same cloths that you been wearing for a year? Because salva did. In the book “A Long Walk to Water” written by Linda Sue park, she talks about Salva's journey that took years and years to get to safety after the war stated. The war came to his village while he was in school he had to run to the bush with not knowing where is his family or even knowing if they are alive. Salva was running from the war for 24 years before he finally found safety in the united states. He was 11 when he started to run, he met a friend along the way but he sadly died due to being eaten by a lion. He also meant his uncle along the way which help Salva gain confidence that he was going to make it out alive, but again the uncle passed away due to three men shooting him, because he was trying to keep everyone safe. In this essay I am going to prove that we can learn to never give up even if things are at the worst point possible and if you take things one step at a time you will get through whatever you are struggling with. The key aspects I am going to be talking about are how did Salva learn never give up and even when salva is at his worst he never gives up and still has hope that he is going to make it out alive. My first body paragraph I am explaining how salva never gave up.
Salva’s uncle (Jewiir) was one of the many factors that aided him in his survival. When Jewiir, pretty much his only hope of protection and his source of
Sadly, a group of nuer that was against the Dinka had killed salva's uncle."They buried uncle in a hole about two feet deep, a hole that has already been made by some kind of animal."(64) Not only did Salva loose Marial but he also lost the only family member that was close to him. Salva couldnt hold on to this forver. This was the best they couldve done for his uncle, bury him. There was no way that his unc couldve cam back to life so Salva had to get over this tragic event to keep going. Even though he was in shock, he kept on traveling the next day.He couldnt stop moving. He knw that in his heart. It was logical that he continued with the group, othrwise he wouldve been left behind as the group didnt care for him any more since his uncle died. Following his uncle's death, "..the group's attitude toward him changed."(65) they had all thought that he was too small and weak to go along with the group. So as predicted they've started to neglect him again. Even though times were tough, Salva still begged for scraps because it was all he was going to get and he had to accept that. One of Salva's goals was to reunite with his family again. But deep in his mind he always knew that ther was a possiblity that he could never see his family again bcause they couldve ben kileld. But slava nevr chose to accept that reality, instead he looked on the bright said and
Imagine having to run away from your hometown with thousands of other boys you don’t know. Then imagine having to walk 16 hours a day to provide dirty water for your family. Well there’s a boy named Salva that had to run away and walk thousands of miles not knowing where he’s going or where is family is. But for a girl named Nya she had to persevere walking through the hot weather stepping on thorns for 16 hours everyday just to provide dirty water for their family. Nya and Salva have a hard and sad life, but they couldn’t have survived through it without unity, love, and perseverance.
There are many stereotypes regarding heroes and what physical characteristics they should have and/or what they should look like. Tim O’Brien may not ride horses and have a six-pack with long curly hair, however, he does have what every other hero has - the personal traits. On the Rainy River is an autobiography by Tim O’Brien, that’s about his experience with war at a young age. In the story, there are multiple occasions of when Tim does specific actions that can be related to those of a hero. Through a pair of archetypal lens, it is clear that due to Tim O’Brien heavily symbolizing as a hero in the story, he struggled with his internal decisions as a consequence.
The book has lots of different times where I feel I am personally connected with the story or can make connections with the characters or setting. The setting of the book is in an old rural town where there isn’t many people. The town is constantly being described in further detail throughout the book. The more the town is described, the more it reminds me of the little old towns we passed on our way done to Coffs Harbour in NSW. In particular, this one that ran down a river with a sugar can mill all old buildings and a dodgy road. It matched the exact description of the town in the book. Also in the book the main character and his brother Keith always spend afternoon with their dad eating chips or special special treats.
Even at the beginning of the book he had to deal with a lost of loved ones. At the beginning of the story, Salva left his school and his family behind in order to survive. Bombs and shooting took place outside his school. He had no chose to leave, in order to survive. When he found group of people, they left him.
This means that Salva is trying to keep moving so he can be safe. Next on page 53 it states that Salva’s toenail came off but even through all that pain Salva capt moving on his journey. This shows that Salva will keep moving on his journey even though his toenail came off, and this is mature enough to not stop because of his pain.On page 64 it states, ‘They buried my uncle in a hole about two feet deep’.This shows that Salva is determined to complete his goal and will not give up over a death, Salva became stronger because of his uncle death by giving him endurance. This evidence shows that Salva had to persevere through difficult task to
Survival is living on the hope that better things are yet to come in your life. Right now in our country people survive because of hope and the belief that people are good and they will help them out. People survive when they are homeless on the streets only because of the people who are good at heart and give them food or money to buy clothing for the winter. Gerta survived because of her family and friends. Anne Frank survived because she believed that “Despite all the evil going on in the world I still believe that all people are good at heart.”
The second survival factor that made survival possible for Salva was Uncle Jewiir’s advice. Not only was his advice a survival factor, but he himself was a survival factor. While Salva was crossing the desert in chapter 7 he found himself losing hope. But Uncle Jewiir didn’t let that happen. He made sure to stay by Salva’s side when he needed somebody for comfort and he gave advice. According to chapter 7 (page 41), it states that “If it hadn’t been Uncle, Salva might have gone crazy with fear. Uncle spoke to him all morning in a steady, low voice.” This shows us that Salva was afraid of the lions and he needed someone to comfort him. This also shows that without Uncle Jewiir Salva would probably be long gone. It also says in chapter 9 (page 53) that “As if by magic, Uncle was suddenly at his side. “Salva Mawien Dut Ariik!” he said, using Salva’s full name, loud and clear. Salva lifted his head, the sobs interrupted by surprise. “Do you see that group of bushes?” Uncle said, pointing. You need to only walk as far as those bushes. Can you do that, Salva Mawien Dut Ariik?” This shows us that Uncle Jewiir’s advice helped him a lot and what Uncle was trying to imply to Salva was to take a step at a time instead of taking it all in one time. Not only did Uncle Jewiir’s advice help now, but years later too. He was
In the novel “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel and in the novel “The Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, the characters all deal with the theme of survival. This topic is worth exploring because it has been a very outspoken subject in many movies
Survival is being able to endure and live through challenges that may wear you down (mentally or physically), and there are several ways of showing survival. “The Story of Keesh,” by Jack London, depicts survival through a harsh setting. “The Five People You Meet In Heaven,” by Mitch Albom, depicts survival through character development. In sum, the idea of survival is shown in literature through these two different ways.
