It is quite impossible for a student to do his/her PhD in isolation. PhD is a research degree and prime objective of the PhD research is to contribute to building scholarship of a field of study. As in most cases, PhD students should work with a mentor or a group of mentors building networks is necessary to facilitate such collaborative ventures in the academia.
In order to build networks in my field, I approach my mentors and fellow researchers whether I can be a part of their research. Apart from that I always look for the opportunities to attend conferences and seminars to be introduced with scholars in the field of my interest. Conference and seminars are very useful means to build networks as many scholars share their contacts and research interests to each other. I pick those scholars from the conference brochures whose research interest matches with my own interests. I try to contact them after the conference and show my interest to collaborate with them in publishing.
It is important to think about network density while managing networks and getting desired results of those. I have been able to keep full network density while building and managing networks with the scholars working in academia. Comparing to that, networks with practitioners, community workers and other professionals are not that much dense. It is quite natural for me to have more density in academic networks as I work in academia and prefer to build cross relationships with other people in
