The story “A Rose For Emily” by William Faulkner and the poem “Annabel Lee” By Edgar Allan Poe are famous pieces of literature that draw many similarities. “A Rose For Emily” is in the point of view of the townspeople after Miss Emily Grierson has died. Emily has always been a subject of gossip in the town and all her secrets are soon unfolded. The Narrator is the main character of “Annabel Lee” whose story begins as he tells a tale of his lover Annabel Lee’s death, which is said to be caused by the jealousy of angels. While these stories may seem very different, both pieces are forms of gothic literature, and share themes like Alienation and Loneliness after death. In “A Rose For Emily” it would be fair to say that her home is symbolic of how she feels inside. It is described as dark and empty, which is probably much like how she feels. Miss Grierson’s loneliness starts and becomes full force with the death of her father. She is described as being cut off from the rest of the world, and very isolated, because of her overbearing father. In the story, Emily’s father is said to “run off” all possible suitors, so even before he died she was very alone. So, once he dies she is left even more alone than before. Emily refuses to acknowledge that he is really dead. “When he dies, she refuses to acknowledge his death for three days. After the townspeople intervene and bury her father, Emily is further isolated by a mysterious illness, possibly a mental breakdown.” (Mosby). Even after, she still cannot part from the loss of her father and sets a picture of him on her night stand to watch over her. The Narrator in “Annabel Lee”’s loneliness has caused him to be paranoid and in a never ending cycle of grief. His lover has died “many, and many a year ago” (Poe, p 765), but he still spends his nights lying beside her dead body. He doesn’t seem to have any other loved ones without Annabel Lee, so one can assume even before he was a very lonely
