The observation for this study focuses on a male high school student and takes place in a Restaurant Management class in the Family and Consumer Science Department of Davies High School in Fargo, ND. For the purpose of this study, the student is referred to as Jayden.
Student Profile Jayden is an 18-year-old, male, African American student. He is in his senior year of high school. Jayden has a very social and outgoing personality. He likes to talk whenever given the opportunity and interacts with everyone in the class, even the quieter students. He is somewhat of the class clown, as he likes to entertain everyone and make them laugh. He seems to be well-liked and has positive relationships with the other students in the class. However, Jayden can have trouble focusing on the task he is given. He often needs to be reminded to do his work and does not possess necessary organizational skills. He needs a lot of attention from the teacher to understand the assignment and to stay on task. He also uses other students as resources to complete his assignments.
He seems to have a very positive relationship with the teacher. He feels comfortable asking questions and asking for help when needed. However, his relationship tends to be very casual, addressing the teacher without the amount of respect that would be required at a university level. He makes his thoughts and actions clear and speaks his mind is a way that is not always acceptable in an academic setting.
Jayden tends to be
It is often said that the less teengers in the reastaurant, the better the sales of the business; however, teens are also customers, they bring their friends with them and without teens in the restaurant, overtime Mr. Jones will shut down his business. Mr. Jones is making wrong assumptions about the teenagers in his restaurant. According to the student blog, “ All the noises came from annoying business people. This shows that teenagers are not the only ones being loud. The Muchy’s promise of a “quiet lunch” is not possible because the restaurant is still going to be loud. Teenagers are the ones who attract the

Though this problem not only affects the students but also their families and the community, it is significant to address the issue as a whole. Male students at the middle school are labeled as troublesome and often regarded as incompetent when unable to perform academically well. Unfortunately, these boys come disadvantaged homes and lack emotional and academic support because many live in one parent household or both parents may be away from home trying to earn a living to provide for their families. Some of these families have few resources, speak little or no English, and possess limited time to supervise their children after school is released. Many of the students encountered at RMMS mentioned that their parents leave their home as early
This student is very quiet and reserved. He does not share ideas with peers unless he is asked to do. His sentences are usually mumbled and short. He is able to generate original ideas using humor and fantasy most of the time. Students find his thoughts funny and interesting, but not always the best ideas for certain topics. There have been times when this student seemed upset because students didn’t use his ideas. I have discovered that some of his ideas are not third grade level and students have a difficult time understanding. In the beginning I thought this student had a low self esteem, but after building a relationship with him I learned it is just his personality. This student could very easily “slip through
With a plastic smile on my face, I take a deep breath and wait until the next “ding” urges me to muster up my “favorite” phrase for the millionth time today. “Hi, how are you?” I welcome the next customer, trying to sound as sincere as possible. Similar to my situation, many high school students are pushed to join the work world by parents and peers. For most teens, the fast-food industry seems to be one of the most common job choices. In the fast-food industry, companies are desperate to find employees willing to work for minimum wage. However, many employers do not realize the conflicts that may arise amongst these young people. Taco Bell is a fast-food franchise that works alongside KFC and Pizza Hut. What was once a small drive-in in 1954 has now become a gigantic fast-food chain with over 6,000
The following is a case study involving a 6th grade student, whom I will call Johnny. Johnny moved to the United States from Honduras one year ago. His native tone is Spanish and he speaks very little English. Other than his birthday, which is October 25, 2002, and that he lives with his mother and four brothers, Johnny’s teachers and peers do not know much about him. Based on teacher observations and daily interaction with Johnny, his teacher has found that his academic strengths include mathematics and art. He is very respectful to authority figures and gets along well with other peers.
I have Josue for writing, and his schedule in my class has changed several times during the year. At first he would start the class with Mrs. Smith and come in after the writing block had begun, when he did this he would came in and not be able to pick up where the other students where at. He had trouble getting focused and staying on task. Then at the end of the year he was in my class the whole block, but that did not help Josue stay on task.
Trey is a quiet and friendly member of our class. He is willing to participate in class routines and enjoys helping others. Trey mixes well with his peers and generally displays the skills needed to work cooperatively with a partner and group. It is pleasing to see that Trey seeks clarification if he is unsure of what is required. He is continuing to grow in confidence and learning to take more risks with his learning. Trey occasionally contributes to class discussions and usually listens
Aiden's functional performance is commensurate with his age. In general, Aiden is a pleasant, respectful student. He requires teacher prompts and redirection to begin, continue, and complete a task. He takes a lot of time to begin class and find his belongings. Aiden will often leave things behind or forgot what he did with them. (pencils, planner, homework) He is very unorganized but has been working on this skill. It is important that his planner is monitored daily to ensure the correct assignment is written down and legible. Aiden has many friends at Northeast and is involved with homework club and band.
Another trend is the recognition of the importance of heavy users of fast-food restaurants. It is estimated that heavy users comprise 20 percent of customers but account for 60 percent of all visits. Some of these customers visit fast-food restaurants 20 times per month and spend up to $40 per day in them. Heavy users have been described as single males, under 30 years of age, who have working-class jobs, love loud music, don’t read much and hang out with friends.
It is a great pleasure to have Alex in class this year. He has proven himself to be a quiet, yet warm and friendly classmate, always willing to extend a helping hand when needed. As a result, he has made many fine friendships in class this year. As a student, Alex is quick to grasp new concepts. He works very hard at all of his assignments, is open to constructive feedback, and is always willing to put in the time and effort to produce his best work. An attentive listener during our class discussions, Alex will frequently volunteer to share his insightful comments and observations with his classmates and teacher, helping to deepen our conversations.
This assignment is based on research from data collected from the upper intermediate group of students. From the research completed with students, (appendices A) the majority are in the age group of 30 -40, with only a couple aged 18-20. They are a mixed ability group; some of the students are very fluent in English language, and very confident in practising their language skills, whereas others less so. Their interests are varied; however there are some common themes that they share as a group: many enjoy physical activity, going to the gym, participating in sports, and walking. There are also quite a few students with young children, who all enjoy spending time with their families.
