This past week I have been on a slight emotional roller coaster led by stress due to homework assignments and life. Not only do I have 3 research papers due less than a month and a presentation along with a summary regarding my “student” client Ms. B, but my personal life (father) are adding the cherry to the top of my “stress” ice cream sundae.
Although I was informed of the hard work that lies in an MA education, I am having a hard time allocating my time towards my studies. Working hard is the obvious and I know it pays off, especially after graduating from an accelerated undergrad program with high honors earlier this year. I truly do have a passion to learn about psychiatric disorders and how evidence-based methods are used to treat these disorders. I actually do get excited when I get my learning on; however, it’s me getting motivated to do it. Then my biggest cognitive distortion of “polarized thinking” kicks in, which does not help me either; more so, because if I do not do my superb best work, I feel it is not even worth submitting my assignments. When I started the program, I desired to seek a therapist to help me grow within the counseling field, but now I really do need to make it a reality. As what I learned so far about CBT, it could help me re-train my thought process about my self-worth about excelling and failing. In the meantime, I need to take it at face value and discipline myself to get it done, because I am all about “responsibility/accountability”, as
The shutdown of state mental hospitals and lack of available financial and institutional resources force mentally ill people to the United States Judicial System for mental health. Every year thousands of people are arrested for various crimes and they are sent to jail. Sixteen percent of these people have some type of mental health problem (Public Broadcasting System , 2001). When we consider that the United States has the largest incarcerated population in the world at 2.2 million, this number is staggering (Anasseril E. Daniel, 2007). This is about 1% of the entire population of the United States. There are many reasons as to why the situation has taken such a bad turn and when the history of the treatment of mental illness is examined one can see how the situation developed into the inhumane disaster it is today.
second edition of Treatment Plans and Interventions for Depression and Anxiety Disorders, by Robert L. Leahy, Stephen J. F. Holland, and Lata K. McGinn. However, as the reader we are not sure if this is even a credible source. Since, he does not provide the background of these authors how can we prove they have the authority to support the argument. Lukianoff and Haidt fail to mention the legitimacy of the authority which, in my perspective weakens their argument. They also claim Republicans and Democrats have never particularly liked each other, but survey data going back to the 1970s show that on average, their mutual dislike used to be surprisingly mild. The problem with this statement, is they give no source for who conducted the
The medical model of abnormal psychology treats mental disorders in the same way as a broken arm, i.e. there is thought to be a physical cause. Supporters of the medical model consequently consider symptoms to be outward signs of the inner physical disorder and believe that if symptoms are grouped together and classified into a ‘syndrome’ the true cause can eventually be discovered and appropriate physical treatment administered. Behaviors such as hallucinations are 'symptoms' of mental illness as are suicidal ideas or extreme fears such as phobias about snakes and so on. Different illnesses can be identified as 'syndromes',

Everyone has a personality with character traits, but when these traits are rigid and self-defeating, they may interfere with functioning and even lead to psychiatric symptoms. The fifth edition released by the American Psychiatric Association concerning the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) was announced in May of 2013. This version differs because DSM-5 combines two disorders that have been previously identified in DSM-4, which are alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence, into one type of disorder. DSM-5 labels this as alcohol use disorder, or AUD, which is then further subdivided into three classifications: mild, moderate, and severe (Alcohol Use Disorder, 2015, p. 1). In this paper, I will discuss the psychological disorder of my uncle’s neighbor who is suffering from alcohol use disorder. For
After the implementation of the (Brad H) stipulation, mandates regarding how treatment was administered evolved to effectively provide mental health treatment to the criminal justice population. Class members’ charts must outline appropriate treatment recommendations, level of functioning, mental health status, and diagnosis. The stipulation also meticulously outlines how aftercare services are monitored and measured. Consistent oversight by two court appointed monitors was implemented so that compliance to mandates are routinely tracked and observed. Class members diagnosed with a severe mental health disorder (SMI) receives a distinguished level of treatment reflective of their treatment needs. Class members who are not diagnosed with a SMI status receives a lower level of aftercare services and/or treatment needs.
When we head into the realm of psychology, we are looking at it as the study of behavioral patterns and cognitive responses. As such, psychological disorders, also referred to as mental disorders, are abnormalities or irregularities in healthy behavioral patterns that can have significant effects on the function of your daily life. Having a psychological disorder can generate a lot of unnecessary distress, not only for yourself but often times for those around you. A general description of psychological disorders emphasizes the concept that patterns of behavior, thoughts, or emotions that are distinct or deviated from, not only cultural norms, but practical and functional lifestyles that would otherwise
Treating psychological disorders can prove to be difficult to diagnose and treat. Because of this, some doctors retreat to just treating the issues that are visible by putting a "band-aid" on the problem by medicating the patient rather than focusing or trying to get to the underlying issues that could be causing this. I am not implying all doctors take this route but a good majority rather just medicate the patient then help cure the patient.
How does the structure of the brain differ between those with or without psychological disorders and what are the causes of these differences?
Mental illness refers to psychological disorder that affects a person’s mind and behavior, while many people may experience depress sometime during their lifetime, a diagnosis clinical depression is far more sever and would deeply effects a person’s daily activities for longer than a month.
Since my first rotation was psychiatry, my first medical exposure in year three began with internal medicine. In the past two years, I had become proficient in recognizing answers based on how they looked in multiple-choice format. However, when it came to talking about treatment plans and disease presentations, I essentially became a mute. I was familiar with all the drugs and disease presentations on paper, but I could barely correctly pronounce 25% of knowledge that I knew.
Clinical Psychology is a branch of psychology that work with treating mental illness, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Psychologists work with patients that have disabilities such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders and substance abuse. However, clinical psychology roles are well-suited to individuals with a strong work ethic who are able to show empathy while also being very oriented to solving problems. A Christian who is a clinical psychologist must choose whether to treat a patient according to the ways that a non-Christian does or the way a Christian psychologist does.
This week was a very hectic week, being that it was a short week because of the Labor Day Holiday. I cannot talk about this week without talking about my job. Waking up Tuesday Morning I had my day planned out. I was going to go into work for a little while and then go to my field placement. However, when I went into work on Tuesday that plan went out the door and my entire day was spent at work. My stress level immediately went through the roof thinking about how I am going to get my hours in for my field internship. I identify with a Type-A Personality; I sometimes have problems dealing with the feeling of being unproductive, although technically I was at work doing my job. I am a type of person that values structure and an am inpatient with delays. Over the years I have learned how to manage the anxiety that comes with my personality. I have learned to just stop, live in that moment and to control the things that I can presently.
