Do you remember ever going to the zoo as a child? Most children love the zoo. They get to experience animals that they would not normally get to see every day. They also get to learn about those animals and many are greatly affected when they learn about one being endangered and learning that means that there are almost no more left. They want to learn how to help and that is where they learn that they can help. They learn that they too can grow up to be scientists, zoologists, rescuers, wildlife rehabilitators, or spokespeople for wildlife conservation, all of which are important to helping all the animals. Anyone can help by just visiting zoos because zoos rely on their visitors to continue to stay open, care for many amazing animals, and educate the public about wildlife around the world. Some people agree that animals should be kept in zoo’s, they argue that it benefits the animals because their every need is catered to. Zoos present a certain blend of nature and culture. They have always provided a way to bring natural wildlife and urban Americans together as a means of entertainment. Yet, throughout the years the role of zoos have changed. Though once used for amusement, zoos are now being used for education on preservation and the welfare of endangered species. One may wonder where and how the idea of zoos started and just how they, and the environment around them, have changed throughout history.

Some people go to zoos to see the wild animals, but that’s not all that they are for. People in groups such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) may think that zoos cannot provide the needs to wild animals as the wild can. Zoos help animals. They have improved, helping to repopulate species and save animals in the wild.

Last weekend, I began researching the ethnography of Los Angeles Zoo and observed the humans and animals interacting. Los Angeles Zoo includes Botanical Garden which has many entertainment activities for visitors. It also offers many shows, such as Angela Collier World of Birds Theater and Elephant Training Demonstration. Los Angeles Zoo has decent selection of animals anyone can enjoy seeing them. The zoo lies on the north of Los Angeles. It is next to Western Heritage Way, and behind Autry National Center and Museum. There are several parks surround the Los Angeles Zoo like Griffith Park, Wilson Golf Course, and Mount Sinai Memorial Park. This area is completely covered by trees and grasses. This shape gives the visitor an imaginary picture of real rainforest. There some notes on the visitors parking that it is not enough, so the visitors tend to park their cars in another spot and walk about four minute to arrive. Always arrive early to not wait for a while to get tickets.

Zoos are many things. It can be a place for family fun and a good place to visit over the weekend, yet there are so many things going on inside zoos that the public fails to notice. For example, the article “10 Facts about Zoos” by CAPS discusses the lack of enclosure space and states, “Tigers and lions have around 18,000 times less space in zoos than they would in the wild. Some people may say that the zoo is the best place ever!,but i disagree with that. According to "zoo's connect us to the natural world's" by Michael Hutchins". In 2002 more than 140 million people go to the zoo everyday , but the don't know is that a zoo in Denmark had a giraffe and they killed it for no reason ,but the story behind it was " The giraffe went after the bread and right then the man shot it". The bad part about the whole thing was that when it had died they put it out where the zoo was and all though some people think that its good for there kids in my opinion its very bad ,because that's something that kids may love and its hard to sit there and watch them cut it open and show you . The zoo is a zoo for a reason. Going to the zoo is a fun time created to spend quality time with your family, friends, co-workers, and etc.

Zoos are terrible places for animals that do not belong in cages. Zoos include roadside zoos, petting zoos, and smaller animal exhibits. The animals they have are meant to be out in the wild not locked up in cages. The areas are not big enough for them to be animals. They are held in captivity with nowhere to go because if they try to break out, they are going to get shot down. Animals are not meant for entertainment. If you want to see an animal there are many websites with live cameras in order to see it. Also, if you want to see animals the animals should have a free range area and the people ride around in cars to look. The people should take the chances of getting beaten, eaten, trampled, etc. Zoos make money off poor animals who have no choice

Background Info: Zoos in American have changed a lot over the years, but they have not made the full transition to where they should be yet.

Zoos regularly waste millions of dollars constructing statues, and building gift shops and concession stands. This money would do far more to help animals if it were spent on habitat preservation projects. While the Lincoln Park zoo has free admissions all year long, people take the advantage to go and watch animals perform tricks, paying no attention to their dangerous and insufficient living environment.
