During a time of social unrest in the Crucible, people are more inclined to protect their reputation by lying to also evade death. To begin, in act 1, Abigail Williams was inclined to protect her reputation because she was willing to be dishonest, and wasn’t afraid to sacrifice a life, to save hers. “Now look you, all of you.” said Abigail. “ We danced and tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters...and mark this, let either of you say a word about the other things, i will come to you in the black..of a terrible night, and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” (pg 175, Arthur Miller) In this Evidence, Abigail threatens her friends that participated in this ritual with death by her hand if they “said a word about the other things” that happened that night when they were conjuring spirits and casting spells to get lovers. Obviously Abigail is incapable of doing this, but at the moment everyone, including Abigail herself were being influenced by fear, therefore it was easy to threaten them to keep herself safe. Pretty Smart there Abigail. △ As the story uncovers itself, Abigail states, at one point, “That Jumped in, we never put it in!” but before that Reverend Parris says, “i saw something moving in the pot filled with water.” Hale asks quickly, “what jumped in?” Abigail continues, “why a very little frog-” Parris interrupts abruptly and angrily, “A frog Abby?!” (pg 187, Arthur Miller) Hale states, “Abigail, it may be your cousin is dying.
