After reading Chapter 2 of Ronald J. Comer’s book, Fundamentals of Abnormal Psychology, I now understand key principles of 4 models that that contribute to understanding abnormalities. The first model is the biological model, which can be linked to Roman and Greek times as I read in chapter 1. It mainly states that the cause of psychological abnormalities is that of physical illness. In addition, the abnormalities are introduced because of malfunctioning parts in the brain. This includes the possible malfunction of neurons that are found in the cerebrum and the possible malfunction of these neurons and the transmissions between them. Chapter 8 discussed the treatment for depressive and bipolar disorders (Comer 2015). It states that varieties of treatment are offered to the people who suffer from these disorders and are in a widespread use today (Comer 2015). Psychological approaches use three main schools of thought which are psychodynamic, behavioral, and cognitive (Comer 2015). Psychodynamic has no certain evidence of how effective it is but is widely used (Comer 2015). Behavioral is primarily used for patients with moderate or mild depression but it hasn’t really been used lately (Comer 2015). Lastly, cognitive has a growing clinical following because of how well it’s performed in research (Comer 2015).
