One way to identify these types of disorders is through movies. For example, the film Mommie Dearest, directed by Frank Perry is a story told from the perspective of Joan Crawford’s adoptive daughter, Christina. Joan Crawford expresses many disorders shown throughout the movie, while Christina displays how these experiences affect her life. Throughout the movie Joan Crawford demonstrates psychological and personality disorders of, bipolar, obsessive compulsive disorder, narcissistic, and histrionic.

Isolation can assist in a person’s mental well-being, for example mental instability and hallucinations also brings out fear, anger, anxiety and sadness. The four films I have chosen are psychological thrillers which all deal with some form of isolation and all feature mental illness. The films are Shutter Island by Martin Scorsese (2010), The Others by Alejandro Amenabar (2001), Black Swan by Darren Aronofsky (2010) and Secret Window by David Koepp (2004). In today’s society mental illness has become far more common than in the past when they had no idea how to deal with it. Mental illness leads to people causing harm to themselves or others leaving their humanity trapped deep inside.

We feel that One Flew over the Cuckoo’s nest is filled with many psychological connotations. This movie is set in a mental hospital where McMurphy was admitted to be psychologically evaluated because of violent behavior. Shutter Island portrays multiple mental illnesses in the main character as well as in supporting characters. One might call it an abnormal psychology “goldmine.” It takes place at a water-bound psychiatric facility, Shutter Island, housing the criminally insane. The plot is about a man who refers to himself as Teddy. He believes he and his partner are detectives, on the island, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. He is also in search of a patient named Andrew Laeddis, who Teddy believes murdered his wife. The detective becomes paranoid that the facility is treating the patients unfairly and performing experimental lobotomies. The delusion goes on for several months, Teddy never realizing he is actually a patient, until he is brought back to reality at the climax of the movie. His delusion ends. He realizes he’s a patient for a very short amount of time before he goes back to believing he’s a detective. The delusion starts all over again. Throughout most of the film, viewers see his delusion as a reality, until the twist at the end when it is revealed that he is actually a patient.

Joyce Byers is one of the main leading characters in “Stranger things.” She is the mother of two boys Will and Jonathan. They live in a small town called Hawkins, Indiana. To start off the show, Joyce seems to be a mother who is burning the candle at both ends. She seems as though she is working all the time and does not have time for her boys. One night, Will’s older brother Jonathan does not make sure he is home because he thought that his mother did. Then of course Will is not there in the morning when his mother tries to get him up for school and they can not find him. Joyce goes into a panic like any mother would, and this starts the going downhill in the way that she acts and does certain things.
